Is Limmatplatz an ok area to live in Zurich?

Hi there,

I am moving to Zurich in 2 weeks time to take up a postdoc at ETH. Some helpful people at the university have found me temporary accommodation in a small flat near Limmatplatz (about a block to the east of it). The rent seems quite cheap, so I thought maybe it was a slightly dodgy area (if Zurich even has dodgy areas?).

I was there earlier in the year, but never saw that part of town, so wondered if it was an ok place to live. Any advice would be appreciated, before I agree to it.

Thanks!

Re: Is Limmatplatz an ok area to live in Zurich?

is it covered in this thread? http://www.englishforum.ch/housing-g...rich-city.html

basically, it's an "interesting" area to live.

Yeah, I saw that thread, but using "Search this thread" for "limmatplatz" gave me three posts, none of which had anything to do with Limmatplatz I'm reading through it manually now.

Bugger. Could you be any more specific? What's interesting about it? I don't mind having to walk past the odd sex shop, but if it's not safe to walk home at night without risking being mugged that's another matter.

Re: Is Limmatplatz an ok area to live in Zurich?

it might be mentioned in the thread as "Kreis 4".
Would you be living right on Limmatplatz? It's ok but could be noisy.

Re: Is Limmatplatz an ok area to live in Zurich?

"Dodgy" In Zurich tends to be vastly different than dodgy in most places. As a post-doc I'm assuming you'll want to go out and have fun on the weekends. Living in Kreis 4 puts you in the middle of "the fun." Two of my co-workers (PhD students) live in Kreis 4 and love it.

1 block away from Limmatplatz puts you in an area that can be little loud at night but there are tons of good places to eat, tons of little shops and ethnic food stores, tons of bars etc etc etc. Might not be the best location for raising a family but being a lone, newly arrived Post-doc it will be perfect. You're also really close to some great swimming spots on the limmat.

And besides, if it's only temporary if you don't like it you won't be there for long.

Thanks. That puts things in perspective. It actually sounds pretty good. I don't think I'll be going swimming though...

If you like to eat Kebab at three in the morning; if your nose is accustomed to other odors than Channel No. 5 and four course meals; and if your ears don't mind the noise of the Langstrasse (another good search term); then the Limmatplatz area is made for you. It's close to the city's nightlife and not far from the ETHs either.

Re: Is Limmatplatz an ok area to live in Zurich?

If you provide a street i could put this in more perspective w.r.t noise and such. Basically limmatplatz is at the "quiet end" of the langstrasse. In addition, if it is off the lang str. (even 50m) you will have NO problem with noise at all.

This is, in short, a great quarter of the city to live in not the least because of the very vibrant and multicultural nature of it but also cos of the very convenient location and relatively lower rents. Having lived in kreis 1, 8 and 4 in Zürich i can vouch that are more pros to living here than there are cons.

Best wishes.... hope you enjoy... and an early welcome to Zürich to you

It is near the end of Ausstellungsstr. I've asked the people who found it for me, and they tell me it should not be particularly noisy there. So I think it looks like a great option.

Once again, thanks very much to everyone who offered advice!

looked to the map, this is well away from all the nightlife and very close to the limmat river (great walks into the central city from here).

Re: Is Limmatplatz an ok area to live in Zurich?

limmatplatz aint kreis 4 but 5. its the end of langstrasse, where much nightlife takes place and you have a great choice to eat out. the place itself hosts one major tram stop with 2 lines running (good to get away-to work, inner city) and back. 2 bus lines are going and youre close to river limmat and badi untere/obere letten. and youre close to schiffbau/moods/maag eventhall for concerts and some nightlife spots too.
the arae itself is crowded by nice (designer) shops, barbers, cafes, agencies...its a hipster spot, but ok. not too cocky. thats the advantage side.

negative...langstrasse mixes up with some redlight district feel, hookers and dealers.it tends to focus more closer to/around helvetia platz, but some "branches" touch limmatplatz area. sometimes house raids are held by local police at dodgy places. maybeyour house too? (i heard it from friends...but they live more around gasometer/josefstrasse area roughly 500-1000m away where you are)
trams running all day causes noise! so check the spot/flat on daytime in the week to check if you feel alright or if its too noisy.

in general its an urban area. its from my point of view not the nicest part because you can have streets/blocks that have more green (plants n trees or grasspitches) around in kreis 5. but limmatplatz is easy to reach from nearly any part from zürich that you will more or less visit and strike through...

Re: Is Limmatplatz an ok area to live in Zurich?

I wouldn't choose to live there personally. Nice for a bit of close proximity langing it on langstr but no place for any normal person to choose to live unless drug dealers and pros on your door step is your thing. Never mind the stabbings and crime that take place in that area and not forgetting the noise which is not too bad in the early hours. On the upside its buzzing now with beach volleyball in the sand near the river, indochine club (one of the best) is close by and some really exotic women to keep yours eyes busy but only seem interested in you if you are over 40 and have papers (meaning swiss passport).

Mate you seem to fall into the trap of most people here who have hearsay info on the lang str. What you describe could be South Central LA. Certainly all of these events you described occur but stabbings.... come one these are very sporadic events. The good old Stadpolizei keep the area very well disciplined in my opinion. I have a european partner (white) who has "learnt" that the initial impression she had of the place was totally off cue and she has never been accosted when walking around alone (even on a Sat evening) after moving in with me over a year ago.

PS: In your view i guess two academic scientists carrying pHDs, must be cooking up some illicit s**t if they choose to stay there huh?

Puhhhh - lease.

Many "normal" people choose to live there. You think the whole langstrasse area is populate by freaks and people who don't have a choice?

Re: Is Limmatplatz an ok area to live in Zurich?

exactly, DNAman&cham! gob shite of clichés that occur rarely and mostly got nothing to do with people who are not involved with the (dodgy)scene. mostly one is observing it, but other than involved.

the "buzzing beachballers" dont have any impact on anything. its no point pro or con on living near limmatplatz.

indochine to be described as on of the best club in my opinion is exaggerated!
its maybe cocky and posh... but one of the best? for what reason?
not getting in = must be good? (never tried it there but the whole atmosphere around and these beefy bouncers alone make it a crap place...)

Really? I've lived in the neighbourhood for over seven years and had lots of joy with the exotic women and very good drugs.

Maybe you should stick to the teen hookers and overpriced drugs at Indochine; probably a safer punt

Yes stabbings..what part of stabbings do you not understand? I suspect you havent spent enough time on langstr to see the otherside. I find a bit of a joke also when you say "The good old Stadpolizei keep the area very well disciplined in my opinion". There is no basis to this assertion. If drug dealing is legal or tolerated on langstr then this statement makes sense otherwise I dont understand how the same Yoruba talking dealers operate _day_ and night without arrest.

lol....how sad. Your interest in teen hookers is your own business but thanks for sharing it with the world none the less. Living in an area like that for 7 years îs nothing to boast about. Thats like us black people boasting about the hood...straight ignorant.

what a silly comment. He's stating facts from his experience living in the area for seven years - strikes me that his viewpoint has more credence than yours.
