Yesterday my boyfriend got a date for his PhD defence and we now plan to leave Zürich at the end of November, heading back to Australia.

When do we have to give our landlord notice? We've rented our flat since March '06. As we are leaving Switzerland are we able to give just 1 months notice? Or is it best to contact and advise him ASAP?
I gather we have to advertise and find new tenants as we're not leaving in either March or September...

I believe that you have to give three months notice. although a friend of mine in Chur found someone to rent her place and was able to leave after a month... I guess this will depend on your landlord though. Good luck!

3 months notice is a norm here, although you could negotiate this with your landlord.
Usually, if you are able to find a tenant decent enough in the eyes of the landlord you could also leave with a 6-8 weeks notice.

Check your lease. It will spell out the terms of your notice.
