What's the quickest you've relocated?

Hi all,
Need some moral support. I need to be out of Switzerland before Christmas. We have no children but a 2 bedroom apartment to move. So what's the quickest you've been able to pack up and move?

you can sell everything then no need to pack. throwing stuff away also reduces the need to pack. i found you can take as much time as available to pack. as time runs out you just start throwing stuff away, or throwing stuff into boxes.

Well I am going to chuck as much as possible but contacting removals companies now to get some idea of a quote. It's just some furniture I don't want to bin as some of it is too costly to replace.

That really depends on where you're moving to, does it not?

Re: What's the quickest you've relocated?

I got a job teaching in Greece through Times Education, and so gave up a (crap) job in customer services for a well-known British bathroom manufacturer (toilets à la carte!!) and was in Greece three weeks later.
I was very young and flexible, though, and didn't have a lot to pack up (unless you count bin bags!), but it was a move I never regretted!!!

Re: What's the quickest you've relocated?

Hi, I completed a move from San Francisco to Zurich within a month, while working, and including a week where I was completely unavailable and unreacheable as I was on some boat in Alaska. Hard, but doable if you are methodic and, in my case, if you have help from someone you trust (for example, I needed to be in the office but my mom was there when a buyer came to pick up an item, or the apartment final inspection, etc.). If my mom hadn't been there, I would have had to either take time off or go insane

I applied a simple principle: sell all I could, donate what I couldn't sell (to friends, charities, church, whoever wanted it), and then pack the rest.
Car, furniture, heavy items, kitchenware, etc. all gone. At the end, all that was left from 6 years of life in the US were two suitcases, a handbag, and I shipped about 8 boxes. One of these was a special packing of my swords alone, which couldn't be transported in any other way.

I am a big fan of periodically getting rid of unnecessary items and living minimally, and also I was moving across the world, so perhaps if I was moving closer I might have considered keeping some furniture and other stuff. Good luck!

Re: What's the quickest you've relocated?

We moved from New Orleand to Switzerland in 1 month. I gave everything away in February packed 4 boxes and 4 suitcases. Moved here in March with no employment or apt. prospects and 3 weeks later we had a new apt. full of Ikea crap. I had a 2yo and I was 7 months pregnant. Where's my medal?

3 days is my personal best.

Just pack everything up, stick it all on pallets, send off the truck, throw away rubbish, clean house........done.

It only takes me this long because of the amount of crap i have.

Why people make such a fuss over moving i dont know.

cheers

Re: What's the quickest you've relocated?

5 days.

Pack what you want to keep - send it
Values: Whatever that can be sold, try to sell it. If not, give it away for free.
Random stuff + things that couldn't be sold: Garbage

Just be prepared to pay the transportation costs and try to sell your things in advance.

Good luck!

Re: What's the quickest you've relocated?

I moved from UK to Frankfurt in 10 days.

You just have to make the right decisions:

1) pack clothes, laptop etc in 2 large suitcases

2) ask friends to take anything they like

3) ask charity shop to take anything they like

4) ask local council to take the rest

5) get the cleaners in

6) hand over the apartment

7) go to office and un-register

You can spend a fortune taking furniture and things around the world, you can also leave your baggage behind and start afresh. Life is much easier if you don't have to look for somewhere to put all the sentimental stuff.

Nobody thinks on their death bed, "I wish I had kept that blue vase"

Sorry lol. I am going to the UK. I am almost out of cash so really hoping that moving a small 1/2 bed appt is not going to cost the Earth although with Swiss prices I feel I will be tempted to bin a hell of a lot

Take a look at UK movers rather than Swiss ones.
