Noise levels in Wollishofen, Zürich?

Hi everyone,

I've been offered to rent an apartment in Wollishofen, Zürich. The building is very close to the railroad, though, which is making me hesitate.

Does anyone know how much noise you get from the railway in Wollishofen, and how often the trains go by?

Thanks for any help!

Re: Noise levels in Wollishofen, Zürich?

I have lived just metres away from the railway tracks in Wädenswil, about 15 mins down south ( has 14 connections per hour, far more than Wollishofen, normally only the S2 and S8 S-Bahn trains ply there ).

It took me a month to get used to it, and loved it as I could blast the music even late at night

Trains stopped at 01:30am and start again at 04:44, and it can be quite a challenge to watch TV, listen to the radio or make phone calls. It all depends what kind of person you are. On the other hand, I had a great view of Lake Zürich and the railway station was only metres away, convenient I would say.

Worse trains are the kilometre long cargo trains late at night.

Re: Noise levels in Wollishofen, Zürich?

There is now a tunnel from Thalwil to Zurich, so trains are much less frequent through Wollishofen than the 450 a day that used the track before the tunnel.

That said we lived in Kilchberg for 4 years right on the tracks before the tunnel and the train noise was the main reason for leaving...

Re: Noise levels in Wollishofen, Zürich?

I live Kilchberg, I have the train track right below my balcony, I never notice a thing. Occasionally, if I have the balcony door open and one passes, it drowns the noise on the tv out for 20 seconds but no big deal to me.

I guess it all depends on how good the apartment is, how long you been looking, and how much time you spend at home.

Once you live there a little while you wont even notice it I would imagine.

For me, having the train track there was a small price to pay for the HUGE balcony and lake view

Re: Noise levels in Wollishofen, Zürich?

I used to live within about 100 metres of Bahnhof Wollishofen. There's not that much noise from the trains, except from maybe the big gravel trains, and they are few and far between. I reckon there's more (occasional) noise from Landiwiese than the Bahnhof...

Re: Noise levels in Wollishofen, Zürich?

to me the annoying part was the voice over on the train (calling out the schedule)...The trains didnt bother me that much at all unless for the cargo trains that blasted through the stations....
