IKEA deliveries

For less than the cost I've been quoted to move a few items of furniture from England to Vaud, I've realised that it would atually be cheaper to buy some new stuff from Ikea. Nothing fancy, but stuff that we can use for now and then use for guest rooms etc in a few months once we've got some proper stuff ordered.

We only live less than 5km from the Ikea in Aubonne. We complete on our purchase this coming Friday, and I was hoping to spend a first weekend in the house with at least a bit of funiture this coming weekend.

I just order a load of stuff online, having checked first that the items ordered were in stock in that branch. I got a confirmation e-mail back telling me that delivery would take 6 - 8 weeks!

Does anyone know if it's possible to just turn up at an Ikea store and take away a sofa, bed, table etc in a van? Are there any thirdy party operators who will collect and deliver stuff for me?

Yes, Ikea will even hire you the van on an hourly basis

Re: IKEA deliveries

Hi,

I'm keen to find this info out myself.

Does delivery include carrying up a few flights of stairs?

Also, how much does the van cost per hour (I can't find this info on their website).

Cheers

Re: IKEA deliveries

delivery is at a cost of 10% of the value of the goods (but there is a minimum value), expect to wait 5-6 weeks for delivery. It includes carrying, assembly can also be arranged but is extra.

If you hire a van, it's 35 CHF an hour plus a certain amount per km's.
If you travel to IKEA by way of tram or train, prove that you did by showing your ticket, the price of van hire is 50% less.

Phone them and find out, they speak English.

Re: IKEA deliveries

They do carry the goods upstairs for ya!

God only knows how I would have managed 3 Pax kleiderschranks up 4 flights- never mind getting it into our former Polo.
So worth the $$ and the wait.

Re: IKEA deliveries

The delivery delay seems to be caused by the fact that delivery doesn't take place out of the store's own stock but rather out of the central stock wherever it is.

10% seems to be the going rate with a minimum of 150 CHF - paid that at Interio as well, and it included delivery and mounting.

Re: IKEA deliveries

So can I be reasonably sure that if I turn up there on Friday I can hire a van on the spot?

If so then I can have the van loaded and back to them within an hour or so. Bargain!

I really don't want to wait 6 - 8 weeks for delivery and then play the game of not knowing what time of day they're going to turn up etc...

PS I assume there is no reason why I can't move my own furniture on a Saturday, is there? I don't want to break any laws on my first day in the new house.

Nope, Friday is there busiest day, you can book in advance, Just give them a call.
If you turned up on a Monday or Tuesday during the day then yes you would most likely get one on the spot.

Alternatively do what I did. Join Mobility and then use one of their vans for the hour or so Assuming of course you have a use for Mobility membership in the future

The link for renting the van at Ikea:

A picture of the van they use as the one on their site is very unclear:

Re: IKEA deliveries

There is also a 'delivery'/'taxi' service you can use. Go to customer service, they will call the taxi company. Or on a busy day you can usually see them at the side door. They load up your stuff and charge based on the distance to your house. I have never used them but know people who have. It is a bit pricey but you get it home and dont have to go all the way back to drop off the rental van. Plus, they load and unload the van !

This sounds even better. Do you need to book them in advance? Any idea if they operate at the Aubonne store?

Shopping for my furniture at Ikea is taking me back well over ten years!

Re: IKEA deliveries

I am not sure, I know they are at two close to Zurich Dietklieon and ??.
On saturdays they are just there waiting, it is like a taxi they will come with a little trailer on the back and load up the stuff. If you call IKEA Customer Service they can give you the numbers to call yourself as well. I have also had staff in the departments there recommend it over delivery. I think they called it a furniture taxi, catch is you dont go with your stuff you meet it at home. But its safe, they make a killing of Ikeas inability to deliver.
