Is the Landlord Responsible For Getting Rid of Mold?

Hi there,
Does anyone know if the our Landlord is responsible to treating the terrible Mold in our Apartment that just keeps coming back?
Mold starting growing around the windows in our bedroom and down the walls beside it. We told the Landlord and he said just make sure you open the windows for an hour or so every day. He gave a spray bottle of Mold Remover. We followed the directions but the Mold grows back every two or three days. I have been sick with the Flu for nearly a month. I have been to the Doctor three times because I was not getting better. I am on a second course of Anti Biotics and I still have flu symptoms.

We were not sure who to contact to find out if the Landlord should be getting a Professional Company in to treat the Mold?

So we would be most grateful for any sensible advice on this matter.
Cheers Joanne

I know it's not what your original question is asking for but I think you might be alergic to moss / mould, anti-biotics are futile and you probably shouldn't be taking them.

Mould problems from experience are not easy to treat, I suspect your window wall is facing to the north or north east, this causes the wall to not get a lot of sun exposure in the winter and if there is a build up of damp, the whole wall will need stripping, hot air blown at it for a few days and dehumidifiers installed to suck up all the moisture, after that the wall will need to be painted with anti-mould paint and then another coat of something that doesn't hold moisture, try and keep everything away from said wall, electric heaters might help to keep it dry too, and most importantly windows to be opened early thing and in the early evening, but not for too long, 15 minutes is usually enough, you don't want any moisture coming in from the outside. This is a professional job you can't just spray some bleach at it.

Re: Is the Landlord Responsible For Getting Rid of Mold?

I am sorry to hear that you've had the flu for so long. Hope you get better soon! Have you checked with the GP if this is mould related or not?

Regarding the mould. I second what The Love Doctor said in his post. Just another question. Have the windows been replaced recently? Often if you put new top of the range windows in where previously there were dated double glazed or single glazed windows, the mould starts coming. what might help there is to remove the plastic sealing along the windows (and put it back in when you move out of the apartment). This way a small amount of air comes through the windows even in closed position. Anyway, that helped us once in a similar situation.

I tried to talk to the Regie about a similar problem. The responses were not clear and so I had to treat it myself. I think overall the Regies are protected well and some things just don't make sense.

Re: Is the Landlord Responsible For Getting Rid of Mold?

I had mold in one of my walls, I called my landlord.

He sent someone the next day to clean it up (not bleach it, but properly remove, and repaint)

free of charge. Don't know if it is normal or me having a nice landlord ,though.

This is what should happen in every case. However, if the conditions which cause the mould to form are still there, NO treatment + repaint will cure the problem, it will always come back at some time. Specialist treatment like Potassium Permanganate, etc, are much better than bleach - but will not cure the conditions.
