I'm considering renting an apartment in Chatelaine. I'm not familiar with the area so I'd appreciate information regarding living there and sending children to the local primary school.

Trying to help you but you may need to be more specific. Generally Chatelaine is a part of Vernier, do you mean this area or ave. Chatelaine, or a specific road, etc. Generally out that way is a bit industrial, although closer in, like near Charmilles is quite nice. There are subparts that I would not like to live, like near the main roads or the IKEA, but others near Charmilles which can be quite quaint. There is the railroad that goes to the airport, but mostly not a problem. As for schools, you don't really have a choice and they will send to the local school, which is basically standardised for Geneva. Not too sure what specific school(s) is/are there, but there must be one or more.
