How safe is St Johanns vorstadt in Basel. We are planning to rent a house there starting next month. So any feedback will help

Everywhere in Basel is safe. Some places might be a bit messier or louder, but you'll be fine anywhere. Even the heart of the red light area isn't horrendous.

St Johann's Vorstadt is quite nice, but might be a bit noisy if you're right on the tram line.

(be aware though, no matter how safe, nowhere is 100% crime free)

Not so bad - I prefer the bit closest to the hospitals and park rather than up towards Voltaplatz. I have no problem walking there at night personally. The park turns into a firework battlefield on Swiss National Day, but that's part of the fun

We used to live there and find it very practical but too noisy as mirfield mentions. Our appartment was on the first floor right by the tram stop and it was impossible as windows were not double glazed and we were woken up by trams at 5:30 or by people leaving the pubs nearby quite late. The apartment was beautiful and big but we are happy to have moved to a quieter area.

I'm a bit stuck about what I'd say regarding that area.

It isn't far from where I live - I used to walk from my place to Angela's fairly often. The convenience is nice, fairly much of a hub for bus and tram to take you to different areas of the city easily and having the hospital and the very open park nearby is also great.

On the other hand, walking from my place (near Kannenfeld) down toward the hospital, I pass a couple brothels which hubby pointed out to me and the addict support building is right across the street from the hospital. That said though, I was never troubled unduly by anyone, even walking home from Angela's sometimes near midnight.

Id think its not the nicest part of Basel, you need to know that knowwhere in Basel is far from anywhere and so distance is never realy an issue. But this area - around Kannonfeldplatz, does contain some darker areas.

Id think the best postcodes are 4056 to live in which is just next to St Johannns Vorstadt.
