Since 1 month i entered in the "wonderful" world of flats/room rented in zurich ;-)
I came from italy 3-4 Times just to see apartments,flats,room... I think i did something normal, that most of you already did before me.
I'm still searching, on homegate, immostreet,and sites like these, offers and announces, where you can find many People renting flats. But is there a possibility, even if more difficult, to find a owner of a flat on the internet or on a newspaper? A kind of "direct rent" ;-)

I just found a place dealing directly with the the owner. The best shot you have is forums (just like this one) and places where people advertise directly (craigslist - be careful here, RonOrp). Dealing directly with the owner brings some advantages (in my case, since it was an expat, it was a first come first served ad - no need to compete against 20 people for the apartment).

I got my apartment here in Basel using a newspaper. It is privately owned and so cheaper than those you rent through an agency.
