Thoughts on moving to Ehrendingen?

Hello all,

One of my colleague is unfortunately fired because the department no longer has the budget for a project I feel sorry for him but what I can do now is I introduce him to my friend who wants to find a place to move and can take his house which he has a rental contract for 1 yr. Problem is, my friend is also new to Switzerland. She has her hesitation over moving to an area she doesn't know well but she needs a bigger space for baby no.3 and I just want to see if I can be of some help.

I am not familiar with Ehrendingen or area around Baden so can anyone give me some thoughts on this area? My friend is concerned mostly with whether Ehrendingen is a kids friendly village and does foreign family in general be welcomed or at least not a rarity in quite a small but nice village like Ehrendingen?

We are still doing our research but may be some expat who lives there can share their thoughts. Thank you for the help.

Re: Thoughts on moving to Ehrendingen?

At last, a subject I know about ! Prepare yourself.

I lived there for 7 years. In my old neighbourhood we had people from Germany, Poland, Venezuela, Hong Kong, Australia, Thailand and Canada (and Spain, me). And Switzerland, let's not forget the locals.

According to my friends, since I don't have kids, the school is very good.

It's very well connected to Baden by bus, a 4 km ride, or a very nice walk down the hill.

Once you are in Baden, it takes you 17 minutes by train to get to the Main Station in Zurich.

If you have questions I can help you with, you only have to ask .

Re: Thoughts on moving to Ehrendingen?

Thanks J. Marple for your reply

Based on what you have describe it seems that village is indeed very international!

I drove my friend to there once and we had a look on the map. Just seems the bus ride would be up and down a hill. Would it still be enjoyable during busy morning hours and should it not be a concern? She doesn't drive so I think she can only go by bus.

But I have to say as a driver I like the drive along the hill. Very nice.

Re: Thoughts on moving to Ehrendingen?

If you are concerned about the traffic noise, maybe you should. We were living by the main road, and it was one of the reasons we moved to the sticks: peace and quiet. On the other hand, it is very well connected to Baden. And really, it depends on where you live within the village.

The "centre" of the village, and note that I use the term very loosely, is quiet and nothing to write home about: it has a small Coop, a bakery, the post office and a bank. That's about it. I was told they are building a Migros, though.

That's what I think the problem with Ehrendingen is: they've been building like mad for a few years now. But I guess that's a problem common to the country, or to the German part, at least.

Re: Thoughts on moving to Ehrendingen?

We have friends who live there with a 3 year old boy and 6 year old girl. We have been to their house several times and it is a nice village. They are from England and Japan and have had no problems being 'accepted'. They like it there very much and as a mother to two kids myself, it seems like a very nice place for kids. The bus ride is easy and quick and shouldn't be a concern. Good luck and I think it is very nice of you to assist your friend in this way.

Agreed, it seems like a very nice place for children to grow up in. I used to see 4 year olds walking on their own to the kindergarten all the time.

And, let's face it, I think the shopping in the village itself isn't that great because Baden is so close and convenient.

Re: Thoughts on moving to Ehrendingen?

Thanks to both of you for the reply again.

Actually I have asked and shopping is not a concern for my friend who is already so busy throughout the day with her home office and two kids. Her concern is just for the "seemingly" long ride of bus to Baden as we haven't really tried the bus route ourselves so we don't know how easy or hassle fre would it be in the busy hours.

The house is not near the main road and from my last visit its really a very nice place for family.

Anyway, lets see what I can do. I just hope both parties are happy. Surely I don't want to have bias and just persuade my friend to take his house. Thus I would have to ask for my trusty expat's opinion here

Re: Thoughts on moving to Ehrendingen?

It took the bus 9 minutes from my stop to the main station in Baden. Not bad, I say.

Wishing your friend luck.

Re: Thoughts on moving to Ehrendingen?

Ehrendingen is quite child friendly, the Gemainde has just started "Tagesstrukturen" - childcare from 7am to 6pm.

Primary School-wise, there are two areas - the Unterdorf and Oberdorf. The Oberdorf is the bigger school and that's where the Tagestrukturen is (although the staff meet my son in the Unterdorf and walk up to the Oberdorf with him). I have heard complaints about high staff turnover in the Unterdorf Primarschule, but this is not first hand knowledge. Also children in the Unterdorf are going to have to go to the Oberdorf Primarschule this year because of pupil numbers.

The biggest problem is the amount of building work. I feel like I have lived on a building site for the last three years!

Re: Thoughts on moving to Ehrendingen?

Thanks for sharing! Yes last time when we drove to Ehrendingen we saw lots of new construction in progress. I understand your feeling cause it also happens in our village as well.
