I arrived in Winterthur just yesterday and need to buy some household items including pillows, beddings and kitchenware (basic utensils). I visited a mall Manor(?) and was surprised to see the prices of some of the things.
Are there are budget places to buy the above items for cheap? (e.g cheap plastic plates, dishes etc) I`m here only for 6 months as a student so there`s not much point in spending so much money.
If you have a car I suggest you go to Braun mobel center in Singen , Germany. Way cheaper and also you'll get your VAT back. In Singen you also have Karlstadt , a Target type of store with clothing and home goods.
Did you go to Manor next to the train station?
You can go to Ikea in Dietlikon by train (S8) and just walk 10 minutes.
In Grüzepark there is also Micasa, and Hasler Haus - Fly which also has household items. Ottos is also an alternative.
If you are here for 6 months, go to the Brockenstube (2nd hand store) and you can get a huge selection of kitchenware for excellent prices: like 1 or 2 francs for plates, etc.
Try HIOB, their website is www.hiob.ch. That will tell you if they have a place near you. They stock all kinds of things so if there is one nearby it might be worth a look around.
