Where to buy traditional wooden furniture

We are looking to buy traditional wooden furniture for our new apartment. Not cheap IKEA stuff and not the glass and metal monstrosities from places like Mobel Pfister. Anyone have any recommendations? Delivery from outside Switzerland also considered.

Re: Where to buy traditional wooden furniture

Do you mean modern (clean line square corners, minimal ornamentation), or reproduction, or rustic (anything that looks like pine even when not) or super-rustic(heidi) ?

Re: Where to buy traditional wooden furniture

Hmmm, not an expert but I would say rustic. Something solid that looks like you could stand on it. No spindly legs.

As an example

Re: Where to buy traditional wooden furniture

There's a massive furniture warehouse near here in sargans, can't remember the name of it but if you pull off the A3 and head towards Jumbo, it's another 200m or so on the right. They have pretty good quality modern and trad furniture, some cheapish, some through the roof, but exceptional quality. It's walking distance from the SBB if you don't have a car

Re: Where to buy traditional wooden furniture

I know what you mean about wanting some good quality wooden furniture around. Check out http://www.interiors.fr/homepage.html They should have a store near you. There stuff is awesome! Loads of great English style wooden bits. Be warned though the prices are not cheap but I drawl whenever i go in there. It is just two levels of beautiful pieces where ever you look.

Re: Where to buy traditional wooden furniture

Have you considered going to a second hand/charity shop? As so many in Switzerland have gone Ikea/minimalist lots of beautiful sometimes inherited furniture is donated. I am sure that there is a place in Zurich. I went with a friend to a place in Geneva and she bought the most spectacular traditional wooden pieces and of course you are helping a charity as well.

Have a look at Utiger Möbel in Bern, they have a great collection of tables in wood. It's not cheap, but you have it for life.

Re: Where to buy traditional wooden furniture

In the Rapperswil Altstadt, see

Markus Inauen AG
Alpenstrasse 5
8640 Rapperswil

Tel.: 055 210 08 77

Herr Inauen is a master furniture maker - he can make just about anything. (He has done wardrobes, dressers, book cases, chairs, and occasional tables for us.) Pieces are made to order; his work is of excellent quality, certainly well worth the price.

His showroom is Rapperswil is small, but there is enough there to give you an idea of the kind of a craftsman he is. He can do many different styles; if you don't see what you are looking for, talk to him about what you want.

Hello Craig, I know a place where all the surroundings of a particular area are changed by making it well furnished. A listing of furniture’s is available at [Spam link removed]…

Thanks!!
Not a great help if you're living in Switzerland, like almost everyone here and the request was nearly a year ago.

Re: Where to buy traditional wooden furniture

I agree and we haven't been sitting on the floor since then.

If anyone is interested

Table http://www.seipp.de/kollektionen/tische2.htm

Matching chairs http://www.mobitare.ch/

Most of the other stuff from Moebel Pfister also in Duebendorf. Push for a discount if you are buying lots.

Also very nice furniture at ttp://www.resedahome.ch/home/welcome.do in Spreitenbach but a bit pricey.

Hi Craig,

If you're still looking, Eggenberger http://www.eggenberger-meubles.ch/ has beautiful Italian and Swiss designed solid wood furniture. The website isn't too inspiring, but it also lists the websites of their suppliers. Sale is on until the end of this month!

Re: Where to buy traditional wooden furniture

Fly is great I am a big fan, plus you can get larger items delivered which is nice.
They appear to have 3 ranges of each item basic, fancy and mmmm well.
Quality is good

Re: Where to buy traditional wooden furniture

We have bought such furniture over the years from http://ebay.ch . Ebay does not have extensive exposure in Switzerland, and the Swiss site does not operate in French. So there is little buyer competition and prices are good. There are a few German suppliers who offer new furniture, and various Swiss sellers at a loss on how to get rid of stuff which (in our experience) is invariably in good condition.

Then there is Emmaus, but their stuff is invariably tired.

Ouside of eBay and Ikea (which you've already rejected and which anyway doesn't meet your criteria) we found new furniture overpriced in Switzerland.
