Apologies this has already been posted somewhere else, didn't see it on the FAQ

I'm having trouble finding somewhere to live in Zurich from outside the country so it's looking likely that I'll be moving to Zurich homeless anyway, getting a hotel is too expensive and I'm too old to stay in a hostel.

Does anyone have any advice for a cheapish place I could stay for a week or two when I first arrive?

As your employer if there is anyone who can assist you in finding a suitable apartment, before you arrive. A local reference is always superior to being a foreigner that hasn't even arrived yet....

Not sure if it is a personal preference issue with a hostel, but last I knew there were no age restrictions for hostels.

And I would plan on finding something for a bit more than a week or two. It will take you that long just to get the paperwork assembled, unless you are extremely lucky.

You could also try to negotiate a longer term stay rate at a hotel.
