Binningen, Basel - Insider's review wanted

Hi everyone,

I am on the verge of moving to Basel, most probably starting from June.

I have spent some time lurking on this forum and gathered much useful information about Basel neighborhoods.

Most of you suggest it is wise to avoid Klybeck and St. Johann, while some others do label Kleinbasel as ‘dodgy’, although opinions may vary. Bruderholz seems to be as fancy as expensive, at least for my budget.

But, having read all the related posts, I have noticed that everybody agrees upon the quality of life in Binningen, which is the reason why I think I will choose that neighborhood.

Taking a sneak peek with Google Street View, the ‘hood looks pleasantly green and I have noticed that public transport covers of the area and connections to SBB are frequent.

I have noticed there is a slightly lower taxation compared to BS, and that rent rates tend not to startle me.

I am now curious to know what would be, in your opinion, the best spots to settle down in Binningen, or if there are some places I should absolutely run away from.

I will be living with my girlfriend, probably looking for a 3.5 rooms apartment and we are not looking for exciting nightlife nearby.

I would really love you to have your say, so that I can learn from your experiences.

Thanks in advance for your time

A.

Hi

I live in Binningen since more than 2 years and just love the place. I would recommend Binningen over Basel Stadt as I live in Basel Stadt as well for around 4 years.

There are no such locations in Binningen which I would not recommend. It depends on your budget as well. Generally the areas near the tram line are cheaper and it generally gets more expensive as you go higher.

Cheers

a comment about st johann (in my opinion) - there are some nice streets here. We had our 3month company flat on Hebelstrasse and we found this a good, well connected area and mittlere strasse is a very nice street also, we have swiss friends who also agree.

we looked at binningen also when we were first looking at flats, but found there wasn't much availability or else if there was, it didn't stay available for long! We really liked the area though, and it is one of the cheaper baselland regions for tax.

Good luck with the search!

To be honest, if you're looking for an apartment on a short timescale that close to Basel, you should probably take whatever you can get - Binningen, St Johann (lived there for 2 and a half years, once heard a car was burned down the road, that was as exciting as it ever got), whatever. We're talking about a square mile with excellent bike lanes and public transport, after all. Expect queues of other potential renters for every reasonably priced apartment.

Thank you for your prompt renponses.

So, basically, if I got it right from what you say and what I am reading on the web, home renting in Basel seems to be close to job seeking:

-You waste your time lurking on the web to be the first to apply to the 6 am posting round

-You get called together with countless other candidates, and you'd better boast your references and try your best to convince an interviewer you're the man

-You have to have a lust for outrageous compromises and be prepared to accept lousy proposals with a bright smile

In the end, job seeking wins, at least for the fact that some PAYS you after having gone through all of the above.

This swiss venture starts to look oh so ill fated to me...

I've lived in Binningen for 6 years. I'd only suggest that you don't be too close to Spiegelfeld school. And depending on your sense of humour, you might not want to live in Fuchshagweg.

On the other hand, most housing stock in Basel seems to be pretty good and not super expensive (well... compared with London) so when you finally do get somewhere, it will be OK. And it is a very nice place to live (any part of it). Good luck!
