Re: No electricity bill

Usually utilities are included in the monthly rent. They are called Nebenkosten.. Check your rental contract, it should be mentioned there

Re: No electricity bill

Nope!
Nebenkosten here include everything unless mentioned otherwise on the contract. I do believe, though, that you might get a supplementary bill once per year if you have exceed the normal use. Maybe someone else on EF can verify that.

Electricity companies have a monopoly in each village or town here. The trick is to find out where you live, and then ask someone. Maybe your landlord or the person who rented the apartment to you might know something? As the bills are usually sent out every 6 months, you might be due for one soon.

Normally your landlord should have registered you with the electricity company, and now you have a problem as the electricity meter was probably not read when you moved into the apartment, and now someone will be estimating your electricity useage and sending you the subsequent bill.

The electricity useage paid for in the "Nebenkosten" (or extra costs) is only that which is used in the communual areas, stair lighting, lift, and cellar lighting. The electricity used inside your apartment is almost always billed directly to the tenant. (An exception would be when renting a furnished room).

Expect to be charged at least Fr 200,-- per person per year, it will depend mainly on how much washing and cooking you do.

Please be aware that the electricity companies here operate a black list, and if you have unpaid electricity bills elsewhere in Switzerland, you would have trouble getting a new supplier.

Re: No electricity bill

When I rented an apartment, I received an electricity adjustment bill (for the amount exceeding the Nebenkosten) once a year, and that was sent out about 6 months after the meters were read! The meter reading date was 30 June each year. I moved out on 31 July 2015, received a bill for electricity in January 2016 for the preceding year to 30 June 2015, and will receive another in January 2017 to cover that one remaining month (July 2015).

The wheels move slowly here... I've no idea how the rental agents thought they would recover the money from me if I'd moved abroad.

Re: No electricity bill

Electricity is efficient in CH and inexpensive compared to parastatal Eskom in RSA. We are happy for that reason

However good habit is not to leave the lights behind in the rooms when we are not there and try to limit ourselves from running the stove and dishwasher too frequently.

My wife takes care of electricity bills so not sure if we are supplying San Marino or not

As the bills don't come every month regularly so the OP will surely get her/his at some point of time.

Re: No electricity bill

For most of Canton Zug (save Hüneberg and part of Menzingen) WWZ is the energy provider. They bill quarterly, and have two readings each year.
https://www.wwz.ch/index.php?id=184&style=b%20

Normally, electricity is billed directly by the energy provider and seldom through the Nebenkosten. Reason: You can opt-in to support more or less Solarpower with your electricity bill.

The landlord usually informs the energy provider about a change of the renter. The energy company will then do a reading at handover time, send a final bill to the old renter, and informs the new renter about the different options.

To answer your question: Ask the landlord.

We moved into a new apartment block in September. There are 18 apartments and we were the first residents in the entire building.
I will check with the property mgt company!

Re: No electricity bill

That sounds as if the meter may not have been read when you moved in. This is the landlord's task, in such a case you want to make sure you're not overpaying as the meter may well show electricity used during construction.

Btw, it is strongly suggested to join the Mieterverband. Especially those unfamiliar with local laws.

Apologies for the wrong information. What you mention here is my case, as I have always lived in share flats.

Wrong.

Nebenkosten only covers communal areas. Your bill will arrive after 6 months and if you didn't take it in your name it is probably in your landlord's so ask him for it.

Re: No electricity bill

In my apartment I get separate bills for the electricity I use personally and the common areas electricity is included into Nebenkosten and split between all apartments. I settled in in July and my first electricity bill came in December, so nothing to worry.

Re: No electricity bill

I have the same 'problem' at the moment.

Had an apartment before, received my bill from Viteos monthly, about 40 CHF.

Moved to a new place in July 2015, haven't received a bill. I actually also sent an e-mail to Viteos when I moved in to inform them, but no bill.

Haven't been bothered to follow it up yet but maybe I should, esp. as I plan to move again this year.

Re: No electricity bill

Meters here read regularly, at least 2 times a year.

The Bill here it is meant to be every 3 months, but are often delayed by posting them out.

Once by a holiday, phoned them as anxious it might arrive whilst away. They said it was due very soon, but they would delay the payment date for another month & they did.
