are water softeners common in CH

We are having a lot of stomach problems for us & kids with hard water, not to mention frizzy hair, dryness. Agent says this is common in switzerland and folks dont normally have water softeners. However, others have said something else. What has been your experience with water hardness and do most people have water softeners installed in more modern houses and apartments? thanks.

They are quite common in hard water areas I think.
We have one and do do our neighbours.

I had one installed in my house as limescale was caking all the taps, washing machines and pipes.

It might be my imagination but I don't seem to need to scale my teeth as often after installing it too.

Yes, it was the 1st thing we had put in when we last moved ... ok, the kids beat us to it with the WiFi but in terms of actual necessities, we have a water softener machine. You will pay installation, the machine cost & probably a maintenance contract.

Unless your water is supplied from a lake, it will be hard here (and rather good). Yes, water softeners are common, though there has to be a question about the environmental effect of dumping 100Kgs of salt a year into the drainage system...

There was me thinking you were going to mention all the salt scattered along the roads, pavements going into the drainage system. Classic.

Re: are water softeners common in CH

Not sure about your area- but here salt is hardly ever used on the roads anymore, for that very reason.

hard water is actually good for your heart, if I remember rightly.

Re: are water softeners common in CH

Thanks. So i conclude they are common from the responses so far. So, why would the landlord want to save money on that and want the tenant to put it in - are they so expensive to install and maintain? Yes, we have the same issues on the pots, pans, taps and teeth as well!

Re: are water softeners common in CH

A lot of newer apartment buildings do have water softeners installed. Guess it is also beneficial for them as the gadgets have less wear and tear in the long run.
