| | | Baden, Wettingen or Brugg????
Hello folks!
I'll move ( I hope after have my work permit) to Baden area, but I would like to know where is a good place to live with my family, wife and daughter. I saw that the biggest cities in this area are Baden, Wettingen and Brugg. But I prefer a place where it has a kindergarten, supermarket, swiss-german language school, etc.
What do you suggest? Or do the small cities have all these enough?
Thanks....

All the places mentioned have those facilities and in order of preference I would go for Baden, Wettingen, Brugg (if you are working in Baden). There are many villages in between which are also nice to live in. I am sure you will find something up your alley!
Regarding the language school: if you don't already speak German then I would concentrate on learning German first and pick up the Swiss dialect along the way.
Welcome and have fun!

hi, i just moved here not long ago, but have seen many apartments before. Ländli in Baden is a nice area, but i'd really like to live in Ennet Baden, along the river.

Hi....We moved here in feb from Scotland and are now living in Brugg, which is a lovely, though quiet town (where the h*ll does everyone go after 6pm?). My husband's working in Alstom, Baden and has only a 15min train journey in the morning, which is great. In hindsight (a wonderful thing) I think Wettingen would have been a better place to have relocated to. It's got loads of shops and is a lot livelier...and is close to Baden for the language schools. It was difficult to get a place there(or at least it was when we were looking) but we can't complain......we've the most wonderful neighbours, the place is friendly and the transport system can't be beaten.
I hope you find somewhere soon that you really like. Cheers!

Baden is brilliant! I did my exchange year in Baden (lived in Untersiggenthal with a host family) and moved back to Baden two years later. I lived there for 6 years. I first went to Uni in ZH and then worked in Brugg and Zurich while living in the town itself. There are a lot of 'suburbs' around Baden which are lovely and relatively inexpensive. Nussbaumen, Untersiggenthal, Turgi, Ennetbaden, Kappelerhof just to name a few, all of which have good train/bus connections to Baden.

Hi there
Baden is great, i moved here 2 weeks ago, straight after Uni to work for alstom, and so far its been great. I currently live in Wettingen and it takes me 25 minutes to walk to work or 5 mins on the bus. I am also currently looking for a place to live and find it hard to even find a place in Baden + its more expensive and tax is a bit higher. As mentioned by someone else Ennetbaden is so beautiful, in fact i am going there today to swim in the river. Wettingen however seems more lively and probably where i settle for now. But dont take our oppinion for it. Once again i assume that you are relocating to go and work for one of the major companies in Baden (Alstom/ABB), Fly over for a weekend and see how you like it (i think they even cover your cost)

As per my earlier post (under your introductions section) I would suggest a village near Baden. Some villages are nicer than others. Village life has many benefits for children. Rents are generally lower as well. As you can see from reading some of the posts on this forum, many of the members here who are new to Baden appear to be single and live in Baden-I think it's because many want to be close to Pickwicks . But seriously, you need to consider the needs of everyone in your family when choosing a place to live.

Hi Mate, you also might want to consider Windisch (or Unterwindisch), which is next to Brugg. Its very quiet and great for raising kids. Close enough to Brugg and Baden. Very scenic as well. Just a thought? All places mentioned though are very good places for a family though. | Quote: | | | | | Hello folks!

mcomartins | | | | | I think in your previous posting you mentioned you are moving here first by yourself with your family joining later? Have you considered the possibility to get short-term housing for just you then look around for something that might be more suitable for family life once you are here?
I think Mrs. Dolittle's suggestion that many little villages around the Baden area is great for family with relatively lower rent. They are easily connected with the public transportation system.
Just to give you an idea - we currently live in Rieden (just between Ennetbaden and Nussbaumen) and it takes 15 min on foot to go to Baden SBB and 5 with bus that runs on 10-min intervals.
I'd take the other member's suggestion, if possible, to come for a weekend visit and look around here, then decide for yourself what is the best for your family. | | This user would like to thank Snow Angel for this useful post: | |

I live in Neuenhof which is very attractive from family life view point. There is kindergarten, schoool, sports facilities, various shops 200m or 300m away, pharmacy and all amenities to suit comfortable lifestyle. Easy access to the railway and nice view towards the mountains or Limmat river. I passed thru Wettingen, Baden everyday on my way to work in Turgi. Baden is very nice place to live but somehow a bit congested and more youngsters or yuppies orientated for that reason. Thus a bit pricy and too vibrant for just family haven seekers. Brugg and Wettingen are worthwhile considering but also quite populated. I found Neuenhof more affordable accommodation wise and it is only 5min - 10min train journey from locations mentioned by you. Check on www.homegate.ch to have an idea what the apartments look like in either location. Good luck!

Welcome and have fun! | | | | | Thanks for the reply! I'm looking in some sites like www.homegate.ch, and it is a little difficult to know the better place to live. About the German language, I don't speak any German, neither my wife, so I would like to know where is the best palce to stay because the school and the kindergarten to my daugther. And in this new job I will have to travel, so I would prefer to stay in a place where my wife could find everything that she needs.
These tips are very helpful to decide!

I saw it in the maps.google.com and the Ennet Baden area looks like a nice place, it is very close to the downton and the main station in Baden, just cross the river. But I didn't find apartments to rent in this area in the internet, maybe just in the local when I will be there.

In travel to my interview I stayed a single day in a hotel in Wettingen, and I agree it seems like a nice place with some shops, etc, but I didn't have enough time to really know the area. And for me is very important a good place where my family would have almost all things close when I will be at work or traveling. First I don't know how much cost to have a car, but I saw in the internet that is cheaper than in my country, and what I will need to have a drive license.
So, I am starting my challenge to find out my life working abroad.

I had been in Wettingen and Baden for 2 days in my interview (in June). And didn't know that Baden is a little more expensive that Wettingen that has bigger population. I didn't have time to visit Burgg, but it seems that Wettingen is a nice place to live. I will work for ABB, but rigth now I'm work for other company (German). I wife didn't have the opportunity to visit these places, so it will be my decision. I will stay alone for three months, and the next year I will bring my family.
Best regards!

Thankyou Mrs. Doolittle! I think it is a great idea to live in a village, but I would like to live also close the kindergarten, shools, train station, etc.I think during my stay alone, I can check it !

Thanks Zuger! I saw in the maps.goole.com and it looks like a pretty good place. Not so small and close to Baden and Brugg. I will take a look for apartments over there.

Marcos | | | | | Hi, Yeah. I work for ABB and I am in Medium Volatge Drives department in Turgi. I know few people from Corporate Research in Daetwill where I had applied for similar position before. But it came out in different department although we work on similar projects just here I do control and hardware development.
Daetwil is reachable within 15min from Baden by bus. Good luck with your new job What do you specilize in?
