nice place to live in Basel?

Hello,
I'm moving to Basel, I don't have any clue of how living in Basel can be: I've been there only one weekend, and it was raining all the time...
I'm moving on September, and have to find a home. I would love to live in a green, peacefull neighborhood. Since I come from Milan, which is very polluted, what I really wish is clean air... And since I have a little son, I'd like to have parks around my home. But (quite important), since I'm sort of shopaholic some shops around wouldn't be bad.
Is there a place quite but at the same time lively/young you'd suggest me?
When I came there I had the impression the University area was quite nice.
I hope this is not a repetitive thread, I've just began exploring this forum...
thank you

Re: nice place to live in Basel?

I'm feeling all kind and generous this evening so I have done a little bit of your homework for you. If you 'Search' with 'flats Basel' these are the sort of thing the search feature in the Forum comes up with quick as lightening.
Living in Basel
Living in Basel 2
Living in Basel 3
It gives you something to start on.
(mind you, knowing my computer skills, the links might not work, but it should give you the idea of how to look)
The 'Housing' bits of the Forum will help too.
Good luck in the hunt.

thank you very much, barryinc, I'll see if I can find something in the gallert area at homegate. (And you'd suggest St. Alban too?)

Re: nice place to live in Basel?

Welcome to the EF. Basel is a nice place and quite embracing for number of members from this forum. When I went there for the first time in April, it was raining and it felt like this part of Switzerland was quite depressing. After a while, I discovered lots of wonderful things about this mystic city/town. Especially fact that famous tennis player - Roger Federer hails from there, it made me more interested and motivated to explore Basel

Don't worry - it happens to us all!
More important is that you can now see your way forwards a bit.
I used to live in Basel once upon a time. I liked it there too. Hope you find somewhere pleasant to live and not TOO far from the shops.

Re: nice place to live in Basel?

I really like Bruderholz, very green, very quiet and yet only 7 minutes from Basel SBB station. We actually put in an offer for a place there, but were up against some stiff competition.

Hello,
Since I come from Milan, which is very polluted, what I really wish is clean air...
Sorry I can't help much on the where to live question. I'm apartment-finding just now and basically am just having to trust my new employer's say-so on where to live.

However, the clean air comment really jumped out at me. One thing that really struck me about Basel when I visited earlier this month was that it wasn't badly polluted. Having almost always lived near enough to the coast in Scotland to guarantee a constant brisk breeze (mini hurricane!), polluted cities cause me a lot of cold-like symptoms (sinuses and throat become inflamed). Both London and Paris can leave me snifffling for days but I had no ill effects after Basel, even though I spent some time downtown (the plaza-ish place with tram stops and Burger King to be specific). This was on a warm, sunny day with little breeze. Bracing North Sea air, it ain't but it's not like I'd expect city air to be.

Trams are so much cleaner than smelly old buses, I think.
