Please advise . I have been searching but cannot find the answers. I rent an apartment in a block. There is a fire door leading to the entrance /lobby of my apartment. I came home to find the magnetic doorstop broken off and plaster wall behind the door damaged due to the door handle piercing it. I have reported it to my rental company but I am concerned if they will try hold me responsible for repair costs. I’m not sure of the law as it’s outside of my apartment on a communal stairway. There is nothing I can see metioned in my contract. Would Nebenkosten or their own insurance not cover for this? Any help will be appreciated as I have a meeting on Monday with the representative and I’m very worried .

We had a similar problem the people who owned the block flats paid for the damage, but then some manica broke it again when it had been fixed, they repaired it again, and we all had to pay for it, the bill was split between us all, and guess whet yes you guessed the maniac broke it again, so now we have just left it broken.

Thanks for your reply. The damage occurred on my floor. From what you say it would imply that the tenants are responsible and the rental company was kind to have paid the first time repairs.

The block belongs to PSP, and yes they paid the first time, but warned us if it happened again we would have to pay (everyone who lived in the block), the door that was, and still is again (because of the manica) is the garage door, you should open it with a key, but now anyone can njust push it open and have access into our building

Well the good news is that there is nothing stated in my contract about the upkeep of the public area. The lady in charge of my bulding came to look at the damage and did not tell me that I would be held responsible for the cost of repairs. I am happy as I can imagine it would cost a pretty penny.
