Moving in on 1st Jan 2009

Ok so we've got the job , the wife has signed up and we need to find a place , we're told that the traditional moving dates are 1st Oct and 1st April and basically it's dead outside this.

We don't have a whole chunk of money so we're beginning to get a little concerned at the moving date , anyone have any pointers ?

P.S. I know I'm a noob and therefore deserve absolutely no help but thanks to those who do.

Re: Moving in on 1st Jan 2009

It's always possible to find something, you just need to know where to look.

But, some questions:

1. Where are you moving in CH?
2. What do expect your budget to be?
3. How many will you be moving?
4. Other circumstances that can affect your moving choice?

Re: Moving in on 1st Jan 2009

Everything is possible. We moved into our place "ausser-termin" (sorry spelling) on December 31st. You just need to be very flexible in what is available/offered. You also might want to post a notice that you are seeking a place in the local area Migros or Coop. Peace

Re: Moving in on 1st Jan 2009

Peter , you're a star , thanks very much.

1. The job is right in the city centre ,
Bederstrasse , 8027.

2. Up to 1600 CHF all in would be ok we reckon.

3. Just meself and the chief (wife).

4. Umm I need a supermarket with fresh meat at reasonable cost in close proximity , I'd like to economise on the ol kommune tax if possible , she needs a bath and a balcony but we'd be fine with 60 sq m. As long as the commute to work is about 30 mins or so no complaints at all.

Thx again.

Ah, don't worry at all..

Try to check immo.search.ch... just fill in the zipcode from the workplace, adjust the slider to 1600 CHF.. and see your prime choices...

Re: Moving in on 1st Jan 2009

for that apartment above.. according to SBB.ch, you need to walk circa 5-10 minutes to the trainstation, take rail S8, then walk another 5 mins.. then you are at work in less than 35 minutes...

Re: Moving in on 1st Jan 2009

also, since you funds are not great: consider SwissCaution.ch as an alternative to paying the deposit for your apartment. You need to check if the landlord accepts it, but most do. I used it myself, and it worked out perfectly. Instead of paying 3-4 months deposit, you pay SwissCaution 250 CHF per year...

What do you mean by tax heavy?.. If you mean income tax, I checked the Credit Suisse tax calculator: https://calculators.credit-suisse.co...ory/tax/tax.do and virtually there is no difference between postcode 8027 and 8952

Re: Moving in on 1st Jan 2009

I meant that I have no real idea what Im talking about but I was led to believe that there are massive differences depending on where one lives , we'd of course like to economise there too if possible.

Cheers.

Re: Moving in on 1st Jan 2009

Yes, there are differences between the individual cantons and communes within the cantons themselves. In general, in communes, where there is lot of unemployement or larges amounts of people in need of social benefits you do pay more tax. Although, we are only talking 2-4 percent more in most cases. Vaud - especially Lausanne - is very expensive with taxes, compared to Zurich. In general try to use the CS tax calculator, it gives you a good indication of your tax level. But remember, since you will both be working on permit, it means that you will be taxed higher and your tax will go off automatically, but you almost always get money back when filling your income.
