Schwamendingen, was a village 50 years ago before being sucked into the town of Zurich. The tram line was extended out there via a tunnel about 25 years ago. Though it is a fairly long tram ride out from the centre of Zurich.
Sadly Schwamendinger is a soulless grey place of multiple flat roofed blocks. I wouldn't want to live there, though it does have woods very close by.
Adliswil is not within the city limits of Zurich and thus has different - and they must be lower - tax rates. It is in the shadow of the Uetliberg and has much more of a community feel. Transport in to Zurich is my the Sihltal Bahn, Check
www.zvv.ch for times to where you want to go from both places.
Both places have shops (Coop Migros etc), neither is famous for restaurants or nigh-life. Of the two I'd go for Adliswil any day...
