Is Your Work Permit Required Before You Can Get Accomadation ?? (EU)

Hi everyone,

I wonder if someone might be able to offer a little advise. I have just accepted a position to begin work in Switzerland as of 2nd February, but I would like to find myself rented accommodation prior to this. I am a UK passport holder and will sort my B permit out during my first day at work. My question is will my contract of employment be good enough for a landlord prior to this?

I would like to get moved in and my possessions etc across in late January so I am all ready to go at the beginning of February rather then living out of a suitcase in hotels etc. I would be greatful for any advise you can provide on this matter.

Cheers,

Dan

Normally yes, the contract of employment and letter from the authorities confirming that your work permit is being processed should be enough for you to apply for the rental contract.

Atleast thats what worked for us.

Hi Dan,
I believe that will be enough. Keep in mind you have to deposit 3 moths rent in advance. You will get that money back when you move out or in some cases they might chose to keep a part of money up to a year after you move out.
Hope this helps.
Flo

Hi Flo,

Thanks for the info, I have another quick question regarding deposits. Are these normally paid when the rental agreement is signed or do you get some grace to pay this before you actually get the keys to the apartment. I am thinking if I find somewhere to take on in mid Jan to early Feb within the next month or so do I need to have the money available then or early next year before I take the apartment on?

Cheers,

Dan

Your work contract would be sufficient enough to get a aparment. It will be an added advantage,if you can get a reference letter from your employer. Here are few sites to find a house to rent.

usually when you sign contracts the deposit money and first 3 months are due to be paid by either the 1st or the 15th of the month before you move in. So if you sign the contracts now for moving the 1st December. Then all monies have to be in there account by the 1st December at the latest. Ask if they accept swisskaution before you sign , it can save you 3 months deposit money. Good Luck
