No drilling, or banging nails in the wall on sunday. Your neighbours can and will call the cops. Our new neighbours started drilling today, and it only stopped when I told them politely but firmly that if they didnt stop asap I would call the cops.

Probably not, but to check you need to have a look in your rental contract, it will tell you there.

Thanks for telling me and saving me from the cops But I am just wondering what would the cops do if they had come?
What about other days, am I allowed to use the drill on any other day apart from Sunday till 21:00?
Many thanks for your assistance!

Every day till 22h00 is officially ok. Practically I would say it very much depends where you live. Me for instance next to the railway with constant noise of trains go by, it wouldn't bother my neighbours being used to all kind of knocking |

thanks again; I am still interested to know (but only to know and hope that I would never have to check this) what would the cops do if they came to my place as a result of a complain on a drill noise?

Probably give you a fine few hundred Swiss francs and put you on the record! They wouldn't injail you unless they had a good reason for that! So drill away safely!

I would check the rules with your local Gemeinde. I know in Zürich where I live you cannot use a lawn mower after 20hr(got cranky neighbours) and certain machinery noise has to stop at 19hr. This really all depends on what your neighbours will allow you to do so ask them but if you want to know the exact rules check with your Gemeinde.

I'm working on the 7am - 10pm basis...but the little old lady downstairs hasn't complained yet about my kids running around from 6am - anyway she gets up before then because I smell her first cigarette of the morning about that time... Our laundry is definitely 7am to 10pm...

FYI, I was boring yesterday - Saturday - and was told by the very nice Swiss guy doing the boring, that in fact I am not allowed to bore holes after 5pm on a Saturday. there's a new one |

Try being interesting instead of boring
I find that in my town we're allowed to be interesting even on Sundays, and after 5pm |

We all have different lifestyles but everybody should be able to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet in their own home at evenings and at weakends, It isn’t hard to show a bit of consideration. Whatever building or gemeinde rules say, it’s common sense that you shouldn’t be drilling holes in walls on Sunday at all, or very late in the evening on any other day of the week.

Ah yes, and being 'inconsiderate' within a couple of weeks of moving in, before you've even really met the neighbours...not a good way to start off the relationship...

Let's remember you are, of course, allowed to make a certain amount of noise preparing your new apartment as you have just moved in and I'm sure your neighbours will be sympathetic to the fact you need to drill in early evening if you are at work all day and they will also be aware that this is not going to go on forever. That is why having a chat with them will put them and you at ease. There is nothing more annoying than listening to a drill of a neighbour and not knowing when it's going to end so if you agree that you will finish at 7 in the evening they could very well be happy to be kept informed and less likely to call the police. It will also help if you tell them how many days you need to do this work and when you will have everything completed. Also, you could try putting a note in their letter boxes informing them about the work you have to do, when at what time you will be making noise, invite them to come and speak with you if they need to and thanking them for their understanding.
BTW you can drill and work all day Saturday starting at 9 stopping between 12 and 13 hr and finishing at 17 hr.. if you are going to drill all day Saturday it is considerate and certain to be appreciated if you let folks know.
Good luck getting your apartment ready.

Thanks for the correction there. Proof that I am living in German speaking countries Way too LONG!! Drilling.... not boring, that is of course something completely different. Thanks though to whoever confirmed my 5pm on a Saturday though |

Thanks for your advice, but I think that it is not so reasonable to have a chat with ALL the neighbors concerning this very standard issue of drilling. There should exist regulations which determine precisely the rules and basically I believe that everyone should just follow it.

I've seen once a note being posted at the entrance door of an apartment block:
"We will be having a Birthday party this Saturday afternoon between 2pm - 5pm. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause."
I thought that was very a nice gesture. Why not do this also for any other activity which might be a bit loud?
On Sundays, I would think it is nice to have a bit of quiet as everyone seems to need it desperately.
