Pets allowed...?

Good morning everyone.

I would like to know if an advert for an apartment or house to rent does not state pets allowed is it rude to then ask the landlord if you can have pets? I have two cats and I have noticed on some houses I have liked that it doesn't state pets allowed so I don't want to upset anyone by asking the question...... could anyone shed some light on this please?

Many thanks.

Re: Pets allowed...?

The house we ended up getting didn't advertise that pets were allowed. It was the first question I asked and it was no problem. Our 2 dogs even have their own annex on our rental contract guaranteeing that they are allowed to live here.

As a rule, if nothing specific is stated then pets are allowed. If they're not, then this has to be specifically mentioned (keine Haustiere). Obviously, if you have 3 dogs and 10 cats it might be wise to check with the landlord first (don't laugh, my friend had 3 dogs and 5 cats....)

Glad you were able to find somewhere for you and your pets and for your advice. Would you advise to get all pet related things in your contract too?

Sorry if this is confusing but my partner is Kees04 so he replied but realised that it might confuse the people giving advice to me haha so I will make sure he does not reply to my post in future

I would recommend checking the fine print. Some contracts say that pets may only be kept with the express (and written) permission of the landlord. Assumimg that because it isn't mentioned it is allowed can be risky...

Re: Pets allowed...?

When we were hunting we always asked as we have three Labradors. Many places we wanted had pets ok in the ad' but wouldn't take 3 dogs. Our apartment was fairly close to the top of the list, and we had to sign a form (I forget the name) which basically said the dogs were cool as long as they didn't mis-behave. Best to be upfront and ask from the off.

Thank you Snoopy and Papa Goose,

I will feel more confident asking about my two cats and if I manage to get a house soon (fingers crossed) I will make sure I check the contract and get something in writing about the cats living there.

Thanks again!

Re: Pets allowed...?

I agree with others.
When we moved here we had 4 large dogs, and three rabbits!

Our house hunting was handled by a relocation agent, and she said that even some of the places that said dogs/cats were ok, did baulk at the thought of so many.

In the end we found a brilliant place, but to cover ourselves we did have the dogs added as part of the rental agreement. The landlord listed that we were allowed up to four dogs of a certain size, plus unlimited smaller animals (he was pretty relaxed).

TBH I don't think you will have too many problems finding a place that allows two cats, but I would still always have it added to your agreement, as if one of the neighbors turns nasty and complains to the landlord then at least you have proof you are not doing anything wrong.
