Moving Company Recommendation

My partner and I just moved from Zürich to Schaffhausen. We received many quotes -- one from a company that thought it would take 4 movers 11 hours to do our move for a princely sum over 3k CHF.

One company - which was one of the lowest - not the absolute cheapest stood out and we hired them. We were a little nervous - as anyone would be - but they were absolutely incredible. They moved our 5 room flat from Zürich to Schaffhausen - the showed up exactly on time - didn't nick even 1 piece of furniture - and were very friendly and polite all for 1200 CHF - 3 men. They even moved an existing large piece of furniture that was already in the house without blinking. I would strongly recommend this company.

Kaylan GmbH
Tele 044 740 82 30
info@kaylan-umzug.ch / www.kaylan-umzug.ch

This is not an ad - rather a very hearty recommendation from a very satisfied customer.

Oh -- and they are also doing our move out cleaning, with guarantee, at a reduced rate since they did our move.

Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions about our experience.

Thanks for the recommendation - called them but unforunately the chap couldn't speak a word of english.
I'm sure it's a good company but doesn't help that I can't speak German...

Re: Moving Company Recommendation

We just moved with Kaylan after seeing this recommendation, and we can heartily recommend them.

They charged us 2500 for 4 men, two trucks and about nine hours' work (pretty hard work, too, as the new place is on the 2nd floor, there's no lift and we have quite a few books...). The price also included the purchase of sixty moving boxes.

We haven't found any damages yet, apart from a couple of cheap plates which we packed ourselves (having seen the movers in action, next time we'll go for their full packing service). Not a scratch on a single piece of furniture - they were also very careful to place stuff away from walls, wherever possible, to save scratches and marks.

The movers also disassembled and reassembled bulky items, such as the beds. In some cases they reassembled stuff better than it was assembled in the first place...

All communication before the day was in English (by email and telephone). On the day of the move, the movers spoke a mixture of German and French (I suppose it depends on which team you get).

All in all a very positive and not unreasonably priced experience.

The cleaning was adequate, but they failed to turn up at the appointed 08:00, after we'd dragged ourselves all the way from Glarus to meet them there. We stayed a couple of hours, then gave up and went shopping in town. The cleaners then had the cheek to call MN in the middle of the afternoon to ask when we were going to come and meet them with the cash! I had to put my shoes on and traipse all the way back into Zurich and on to Maennedorf, just ten minutes after I'd got in and put the kettle on!

Moving: 10/10
Cleaning: 5/10

I'd still very warmly recommend the movers. They did a brilliant job.

Thank you! One more question: what sort of above-and-beyond cleaning did they do? Oven? Extractor filters? Inside and outside windows?

Thanks!

They did all of the above, but they didn't clean all of the walls (they missed some marks in the kitchen, then tried to explain that they didn't do walls at all...). They wanted to do the cellar, but it's still full of stuff we need to take to the tip later this week, so we let them off that job (being lovely, like we are). We found one or two cobwebs and cleaning smears they'd missed, but everything had been nicely de-calced, the floor tiles were spotless and the carpets had all been thoroughly vacuumed.

Also, keep hold of your washing machine 'key' if you have one (the thing you plug in to activate the washing machine - if you don't know what I mean, then you probably haven't got one). I'd left it in the kitchen drawer, and the cleaners accidentally threw it away. After much kerfuffle they found it again, but that would have been a difficult one to explain to the landlord...

They didn't do a bad job, but we weren't feeling particularly charitable towards them after all the trouble they'd caused us during the day.

The charge, by the way, for a 4 room flat (effectively 4.5 with the size of the entrance area) was 1250 CHF.

Sorry for the delay in replying, I had to wait until the twitching stopped. I think I'll do my own cleaning. I can pour chemical into an oven with the best of em.

Hi there...
did you pay by the hour? Also, did the cost include furniture covers, matress covers, etc. in addition to the 60 boxes you mentioned?

Thanks!

Re: Moving Company Recommendation

Thanks for this, DB. I got a quote from them on Monday after reading this (I'm moving in July). They came back with a VERY reasonable quote in comparison to others. However, I'll think twice about the cleaning services now.

Not that my cleaning would be quite so expensive, coming from a smaller apartment - the price you quoted was actually more than the flat rate they offered for the move.

Yes, moving was charged by the hour. They dealt with everything to do with the furniture - there was a lot of shrink-wrap and plenty of blankets and felt involved - and all of it arrived safe and unscratched, even the wobbly bookcase I was convinced wouldn't survive (it did!). All we had to do was pack boxes.

Re: Moving Company Recommendation

I've just finished my relocation to the city of Zug (gorgeous new apartment, too!) and I can give my feedback to Kalyan as well. I ordered their services as a fixed fee, which was just 40% of the next lowest offer and maybe 25% of the highest offer I received (I did a fair bit of shopping around, because I'm cheap).

First, in contrary to DB's experience, I found the cleaners to be quite competent. First time I've ever moved out of an apartment where no additional cleaning was necessary.

These guys showed up in a truck without a company logo, speaking only rough German (the boss was different, good German and passable English) and I had to pay them in cash. I was obviously a bit leery about that, but they had a professional contract and offered me a receipt on company stationary before I could ask, so that worked out quite well.

They were always late, though. I paid for packing, moving and cleaning, and the boss had to bring the key back to me during the apartment handover, so they came on 3 different days. Each day they were between 20 and 50 minutes late. Ok, not the end of the world, but I was on time schedule on move-in day (had to get the keys to the new apartment at a specific time) so I was almost out the door before they arrived. Also, they're not the fastest guys in the world even when you're paying a fixed fee, so I can't suggest the hourly rate.

The moving services were quite ok, and the guys were friendly. Only a few damaged rolls of wrapping paper, everything else arrived ok. However, my girlfriend had to ride herd on them pretty tightly - a cabinet full of liquor would have been missed, as well as some knick knacks in drawers that they *almost* completely emptied. It looks like their boss does a sort of final inspection before the handover, so he or the cleaners would probably have noticed it, but we felt better keeping an eye on them. Communication amongst the team was not the best - the packers did not seem to have communicated to the movers that they didn't finish packing some items, for example. The "de-montage" service doesn't seem to include removing screws from the wall (I didn't expect them to repair the wall, but I did figure they'd take the screws out when they took down the pictures!). In retrospect, asking them to do the lights was too much - I forgot how strict Switzerland is with electrical code - but they were surprised when the girlfriend told them to take the light fixtures down and move those as well (putting them back up was not an option for them). They did give some good advice on fixing some crappy old Ikea furniture I had with a few strategically-placed L-clamps, too.

The only real gripe I have can't be substantiated - I watched them putting together my sofa, and they couldn't quite get the two pieces together. I know how hard that piece can be, so I didn't say anything, and decided to fix it after they left. We moved the couch around a bit afterwards, then when we lifted it up to assemble the two pieces correctly, we saw a scratch in our new floor. I can't say for sure, as we might have done it while moving the couch, but it looks like it would have happened when they were shoving the two pieces together.

All in all, I'd recommend them. Just keep an eye on them to make sure they get everything.

Re: Moving Company Recommendation

It seems to be expensive. Do you have an idea, how much they would cost for moving and furniture assembly / disassembly?
I also plan to check the prices from Germany. Anyone tried that?

Re: Moving Company Recommendation

Based on the recommendations here, I just asked Kaylan for a quote and I was very pleasantly surprised. It seems reasonable.

I'm doing all the packing, but they're going to disassemble and reassemble furniture, move all our plants and crap from a 6 room flat to a 5.5 room flat. They estimate they can do it in a single day, 4 men. Not so sure about that, but we'll see. I've sent them a few additional questions.

Soo, the move is over. It took 2 days and 5 men. However, we were very happy with the work. The movers worked very hard, and worked well together, one spoke English. The guy who did the disassembly -assembly was really good. Better than the original installation guys. So, I'd recommend them...it was a fair price for a big job.

Will report back after the cleaning.
