Moving from Bern to the UK

Hello, does anyone have any ideas on a cost effective way to move from Bern to the Uk ( Peterborough area - Northants ). Perhaps someone knows someone thats moving over this way and going back with an empty truck? The quotes I`ve had from moving companies are really high so any useful info would be great. Not many companies seem to have an option of taking a van over ourselves and leaving it in the UK .We are planning on moving at the end of July 2007. Thank you

look up Luker Brothers who are IIRC based in Oxford. They're over here all the time so must make it back sometime......

Re: Moving from Bern to the UK

I used Luker in the past - from the UK to USA and vice versa. Going out they lost all my possesions for 4 weeks, telling me they had delivered it - despite me knowing I did not have my stuff .

I had the full pack service with them and I have to say it was great.

I also had a firend use Luker relocation from London to Zurich and she was happy with them. Only a small damage that was covered by their insurance

Re: Moving from Bern to the UK

I've used LB twice; once great with no problems the other total crap, loads of broken stuff, left several thousand out of pocket. More recommendations on this thread.

Re: Moving from Bern to the UK

That's unlucky - we've got an empty van going back in mid-April... Don't think my new boss would be too pleased if I turned up three months late for work, though, so can't help, I'm afraid.

Moving from Bern to the UK / AHV Pensionskasse

I have had a few quotes and once I recovered from the shock of how expensive it is to move to the UK I have decided to wait and see if perhaps there is someone going back with an empty truck towards the end of July.....so please let me know - I think our stuff would fit into about 20m3.
I had presumed that my husband and I could take our pensionskasse and AHV out when we left but after reading about the new law on June 1st I am concerned that this is not going to happen. I have read the many threads on the subject and would like to know if anyone knows if it would be possible to quit our jobs / hand in our working permits here 20th May - in time to collect but still be able to holiday here until the end of July when my new job / house will be ready in the UK or do you have to physically leave the country and show proof of that.
We have been working here for nearly 10 years.

When we moved all of our stuff from the UK to Switzerland, my sister-in-law who used to own a haulage company, pointed us to a company in the UK, unfortunately I cannot remember what they were called BUT on the Swiss side they work together with Fiege.
We just packed everything up ourselves, weighed, measured, valued everything and then Fiege came to pick it up. It was fairly cheap, I think we paid CHF 450.00 to move all of our stuff.
So you could try:
Fiege Logistik (Schweiz) AG
Genua-Str. 11
4142 Münchenstein
Tel. 061 337 44 44

I've heard lots of really bad stories about Luker Brothers. Apparently some other moving companies in the UK will "farm out" a job to them as well, so even if you don't think you are using them, you may be (I have a sneaking suspicion that's what happened with our move but I didn't know at the time to ask the right questions). I just wanted to say that for anyone thinking of using them, do your research. Ask around among folks who have moved to/from the UK as I know when I was reserarching movers I heard several horror stories about them.

I completely agree with Ms Mole. I would never, ever use them again and would NOT recommend them to anyone.

Re: Moving from Bern to the UK

Remember when people bemoan others on forums it is always because something has gone wrong.

Very rarely do those who have no complaints mention it. Well this is one of those rare moments. Luker Bros were recommended to my by two very happy customers and I too cannot recommend them enough.

They were absolutely astounding and could not of helped me more.

I endorse them completely.

Well done Lukers.

I appreciate your need to add contrast to the earlier slagging posts, but I never thought I'd hear this word used to describe some removals men.

Re: Moving from Bern to the UK

Hey, its not brave at all ... just following in the footsteps of the millions of other south africans that move to the uk - although we did take a 10yr detour in CH. I am actually giving up our apartment tomorrow - so last day end of July. 4 1/2 rooms, 1 bath, 1 shower, 2 toilets - eigerplatz area. Rent Sfr 1900 incl. nk. I can give you the name of the agent after giving my notice if you are interested.
