Re: Best place for Family of 4 to live in/near Zurich

Have you checked out this thread?

http://www.englishforum.ch/housing-g...rich-city.html
That's geared to Zurich city - if you're looking for something a little ways out, try the suburbs down either side of the lake. (e.g. Kuesnacht, Meilen, Uetikon on one side, Thalwil, Waedenswil, Horgen on the other.)

Not too much difference between the various suburbs really - or to be more precise, there will be way more difference between two apartments in the same town than there is between one town and the next.

Every town has its own school (at that age, and given the intention to buy, I assume you're sending them to local school?) so it's just a matter of finding out how close a particular apartment is to the school. Likewise every town has its own little shops, plus you're within easy distance of the big city if you need something out of the ordinary.

Re: Best place for Family of 4 to live in/near Zurich

You already have a good list of places and possibilities mentioned in your earlier thread:

living outside Zurich - Easy commute

Perhaps have a look on homegate.ch to see what possibilities are open as far as housing goes. It might be advisable to rent first and then look around for a place to buy, rather than buying right off the bat.

Edit: I thought I might be going slightly bonkers, until I realised one of the mods must have combined these two threads... ;-)

Come to Baar, pay much less tax too. Train twice an hour into Zurich HB, about 25 minutes. Good for families too; some great facilities such as the local pool which has no less then six pools open in the summer, six(4 in the winter).

Suggest you use cff.ch website to checkout local stations to figure out a reasonable search area...

Mark

Re: living outside Zurich - Easy commute

I've commuted from just the other side of Pfäffikon SZ to Zurich city and Oerlikon - by both train and motorbike - and it's not bad. Pfäffikon's a bit of a ghetto but tax is low and trains are frequent.

I've been doing that since 2006. It's fine. Schools are also reasonable, I believe.

Stafa is nice, a bit further down on the right side of the lake. About 25 mins from Zurich by train. Quite a few expats and a great playgroup in English for the little one (Somewhere for your wife to meet some new friends too!)

If you need any info about the place, PM me and I will try and help.

I agree with the post above, check on Homegate and you should find a few places!

Happy home hunting!
Be prepared for ghost towns at night in villages/towns outside Zurich.
Troops out every morning around 8 to the grocery store, to do their daily shopping. Have no idea why. It's not like the food is fresh. But guess that's what they been trained to do.

Re: living outside Zurich - Easy commute

There's also Winterthur, 30 min. away (main station to main station).

If you have any idea in what direction (from Zürich) you'll be most interested in traveling/exploring/visiting friends, studying a map might help you identify one or more outlying target areas to concentrate on.
