documents to be checked while taking subletted appartment

I want to know which documents one should check while taking an appartment on sublet?I have gone through many articles in this forum on this topic but still i have not cleared ideas regarding sublet.Whether we have to ask for original agreement between tenant and landlord?and how one can know that who is landlord?or its better to ask help from legal advisor? Can we put our name on letterbox after taking subletted appt?
