| | | Best places to live in Lausanne?
Hi,
For some reason I am warned not to rent a flat in la Borde” and La Clochatte. What are the best places to live peacefully in Lausanne, and the areas I should avoid? Thanks

Lausanne is a nice city. I don't really think that there is a "bad" place to live. I live in Malley, which is convenient as I'm halfway between the university (where I work) and the centre.

There is no need to avoid La Borde. I've lived there for several months now and have had no problems, and have not heard of any others having a problem. It may not be the greatest area of town, but there is certainly nothing wrong with it. One big bonus is that it is actually possible to get an apartment there without too much hassle.

There are some lovely places below the station, in the "sous-gare" area. The areas to the montreux side of the station tend to be more desired then areas to the Geneva side...but that just really tells you about prices not how nice the areas are.
I don't think i have really heard of areas to avoid. There are places that are more populated by bars or noisy students they may or may not suit some people, but nowhere really that are dangerous or anything as far as I have heard.
If you want a view of the lake though...be prepared to spend a lot more than a place without!!
Good luck

One option is to look for flats in buildings owned by Migros/Coop. I lived in a one bedroom flat on top of a Migros in Ouchy for CHF 605/month. it would have been atleast double the price elsewhere in the neighborhood. Just had to watch out for the noisy delivery trucks in the early hours!
Also, there are some pretty neat flats in Pully, some even with a view.

Nice areas where to live in Lausanne? I would say Ouchy, Pully (if you can afford it) and Epalinges

Living in Lutry myself I have to agree with NatsBrit... beautiful place to live and very convenient as it is on the Bus No. 9 which passes via St. Francois and Bel-Air. i would also recommend Paudex (beautiful beach in summer) and Pully-Sud

| | | Best Place to live in Lausanne
Hi
My wife(Swedish and I(American) live in San Francisco but are planning to retire in either Zurich or Lausanne. I have had many good responses to my question on the best place to live in Zurich. Does anyone have an opinion on a good place to live in Lausanne? We are looking for an apartment , $2000CHF + -. Where are the best neighborhoods for restaurants, cafes, theatre, etc. Also, we like to ride. Are there stables in the area? We will be arriving in Zurich on 08/22/2007 for month stay in Switzerland to explore the possibilities.
Roy

| | | Re: Best Place to live in Lausanne Hi Durandetto, Good to see that someone is moving also to Lausanne! I have been living for 2 years in the neighborhood behind the CHUV (the main hospital) and I love it: charming houses, quite at night, walking distance from the center. No much entertainment though. If you look at Lausanne on http://map.search.ch and you click on “Gastronomie” and “Culture/Loisir” you will see where the restaurants, the theaters and the museums are. Basically they are all in the city center, where the rents are quite high and it is difficult to find a parking. Ouchy and Pully are also very nice and lively areas close to the lake. Good luck! Ciao, Mansi |

If you like the hills from SF and the view of the bay then you much rather live in Lausanne with the lake & mountains as it sometimes reminds me of SF when I am there in a sense that is

True, and in Lausanne it is quite common to find an apartment with a view on the bay / lake (not on Alkatraz though).
Funny enough someone once told me that Lausanne is considered to be the "San Francisco of Europe". I am still trying to figure out why...

Even when we lived in Geneva for 6 years, I was wishing it were Lausanne.

There is no really dangerous place to live in Lausanne. I would not know a single area where i would not walk on my own at night.
I guess the scariest area might be somewhere after the Flon on the "Rue de Genève", but there are not really many apartments there.
Getting to EPFL from town center is easy, there is a little train called M1 (formerly TSOL) which leaves from Town center and takes you straight to EPFL in about 15 minutes http://www.epfl.ch/tsol/
Have fun,

Everywhere in Switzerland is clean, and as already stated, Lausanne doesn't have any unsafe areas.

Hear hear, I've walked around at 3am alone dolled up to the nines in skirt and boots and makeup without any problems; same goes for all my male/female straight & gay friends...
That's not to say something couldn't happen... but I live right next to the Chauderon bridge, 5 min from downtown, 30s from Mont Benon, 20s from the Metro stop Vigie, all of which is beside the junkie and prostitution strip here, and the worst that happens is that a bunch of idiot teenagers get drunk and throw their beer bottles around and leave their McD dinner leftover bags for the gardening guys to clean up the next morning.
