Flats outside of Zurich? How far?

Hi all. I'm not that familiar with Zurich, but when we were in Munich the flats not actually in Munich, but in the surrounding towns were much cheaper. Is it the same in Zurich? If so, how far out it is reasonable to live and still commute into town? I wouldn't want more than about a 30-40 minute train ride. What's the furthest out I can live and still be reasonably close, IE not be totally in the boonies?

I see towns like Oberrieden to the south, Dübendorf to the east, Regensdorf to the nort, etc. Is it places like that I should look?

Thanks.

Re: Flats outside of Zurich? How far?

The tax system here distorts property prices and rental prices as to build in a nice place is made expensive as a social engineering tool, not possible in Germany.

Regensdorf is pretty cheap for its closeness to town.

So, you're saying it's pretty much hit or miss as to what will be cheap and what will be expensive? That's going to make this so much easier.

Thanks for the info.

In general yes the flat prices outside of zurich are cheaper.
If you stay away from the east side of the lake that is.
(Duebendorf will give you more for your money than Zurich)

Tax is cheaper outside of zurich and this means that rents tend to be a little higher than they should be. tax calculator
Use that and stick in some post codes off of homegate to get an idea of what the tax differences are.

I guess it goes like this, out of zurich you are likely to get more for your money and you will pay less tax, however the rent will be bumped in certain areas to reflect this. Its up to you if the tax benefits and extra space, outweigh the travel time and the rent.

Personally I like to be out in the country side a bit more, if you like the city life then you have to pay the premium.

Hi,

the web site www.homegate.ch will give you some indication of rental rates in and around Zurich. Basically, the lower the tax rate the higher the rent.
