Recycling

Hello!

I am new to the Stäfa/Zurich area --could someone please tell me

1.) What does P E T stand for or mean?

2.) Can all plastic bottles (even if they weren't bought from one grocery store) be recycled at another one?

3.) Can all other plastic packaging (eg. from food packaging) be recycled? Which bin does it go in exactly?

4.) Does card packaging (not the wavy cardboard but the thin paperboard stuff ie. from food packaging) belong in the Karton collection or the Papier collection??

Many thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Kindest regards,
Tracy

Re: Recycling

hiya,
1 - polyethylene terephthalate
2 - yes, there are usually recycling banks either inside the shop or outside - rememeber to compact the bottle so they take less space
3 - you'll need to check with your municipality where the recycling banks are
4 - food packaging is karton

hope this helps

Re: Recycling

Just to add a little more detail:

2 - You can return PET bottles in any store that has a special PET bin (the way I understand it is that if they sell them, they have to take them back).

3 - No. All other plastic goes into your regular rubbish/garbage

4 - Only actual paper belongs to paper recycling (this also include books, but you have to rip the covers off). Whatever is cardboard belongs to Karton.

Most plastics and cardboard can be recycled but you have to figure out where and how. Your neighbors or better yet, the pamphlet from the city will tell you what is available to you.

For example, in my neighborhood in Bern, paper and cardboard/karton stuff can be bundled together and is picked up curbside once per week. All other recycling is up to the individual. The nearest recycling bins are a few blocks away but they only have bins for glass and metal but if I go another five blocks or so there are about 12 different bins for non-PET plastics (the picture shows all manner of plastic items), light bulbs, batteries, etc. and there's also a facility nearby where one can take anything and I mean anything (wood, old electronics, large objects like chairs, etc.). The facility is staffed and they help you unload and diseminate the items into different boxes. There are fees for the disposal of some things but I've done this twice and my trunk full of stuff incurred no fee either time.
