Meaning of a sentence in contract

Dear all,

I have a simple question, and would like to hear from the native German speakers or those who are very fluent (and even better if legally trained). Please tell me the meaning of the sentence below (not a translation, but more of an interpretation) as it would apply to any changes made to a contract - specifically does it mean that any changes made must be signed by both parties to be valid?

I have been told that this is standard language in rental contracts meaning that only what is written is valid, and any changes must be in writing - and that the contract and changes are only valid if signed by both parties.

This contract is issued in two copies and contains all applicable agreements. Every change or amendment must be made in writing to be valid. The contract only enters into force when both parties have signed.
