Hi, it's xmas morning. and the heat + hot water hasnt been working since last night. I have no idea why this is happening. But in the past, like 2.5 months ago, this happened and nothing was done but they came back after 3days.
It's freezing cold on a xmas day. Does anybody know what to do?
I dont even know who to call. There is no concierge in the building, the landlord is gone on holiday, my flatmate who might know why is also gone on holiday! What do I do? I dont deal with any other charge bills soo I have no idea who is our heat/ hot water provider. But I know that our electricity is from "Romande Energie"... is heat+hot water usually from the same company?
Please help.

No neighbors to ask..? How about turning on the oven and leaving its door open. Spend the day cooking (and eating) in the kitchen.

Or organise a Christmas activity or join one? Geneva is close and also hundreds of glocals with nothing to do today

The three most likely causes are:
1. Your boiler has broken down
2. The fuel (eg oil) supply has run out
3. The pumps have broken down

If there is no heat and no hot water then it's likely that your boiler has broken down. You would need to inspect the boiler and see if it's working. Usually there is a big box located near the boiler with warning lights which go on to indicate a malfunction. If it is the boiler you would need to contact a firm that deals with heating ie "chauffage dépannage". I live near Montreux and we have a service contract with Lauffer-Borlat who service the boiler do any repairs. The boiler may have a little sticker on it indicating who to call in case of emergency.

If the boiler is okay then it could be a pump that's not working. Usually the same people would repair that.

I just called romande energie, and with my french skills, i dont understand what the guy is saying... I did deliver the msg saying we dont have heat and the hot water now. But he hung up on me. I will probably have to wait at least till tomorrow and see.
I live in an appartment so i dont see the boiler machine.
Is there possibility of the whole appartment building won't have heat and hot water at this time?

Did you at least check the boiler like Nev suggested above? Ours tripped out a few days ago with a red light on and I just hit the reset switch and it went through a restart and sparked up just fine.

Usually it's located in the basement or the ground floor if you don't have a basement. Look for a door labelled "Salle Technique" or simply "Chauffage". If there's no sticker on the boiler with contact details for the firm who handles dépannage, usually there will be service dossier kept near the boiler which would indicate who does repairs.

If the lights are working then the electricity supply to the building is working and it's unlikely you have a problem with Romande Energie. Most buildings have oil or gas fired boilers.

My apologies...I didn't know you had a sarcastic streak!!

We had a flood from a badly fitted pipe, within days of moving into our house, just after arriving here. The Landlord was on holiday. We had no German. But our neighbours were Swiss and fluent in English. They got the Piketdienst out, he fixed everything, and sent the bill to the Landlord.

It's one of those things - if you know the system, it works very well. In an emergency you DON'T need the landlord's permission to get things fixed.
