Which site? Roche is spread across Gross and Klein Basel. In general though, the advice everyone always gives is that wherever you live in Basel the transport system is so good that you're only 10-15 mins max away from where you want to be.

As a follow-up to my previous (rather cheeky) post, I would add that it really doesn't matter where you live in Basel. It's a small city and easy to navigate by public transportation. The areas close to the big employers here (Novartis & Roche) are not the nicest / prettiest parts of the city, and given the compact scale of the place, a lot of people choose to live a little further away.

To complicate matters even more, if you are prepared to drive and have access to parking at the office, there's a huge choice within a 15-minute commute. I live in a tiny village in Baselland and love it -- it's a totally different feel from living in downtown Basel, yet I'm still into the office in 15 minutes by car.

There's a lot of choice to suit all tastes in Basel. I suspect you've been given 3 months in temporary accomodation as part of your relocation package; use the time to get to know the city rather than pre-judging where you think you should live based on a map.

OK, so you're at HQ in Grenzacherstrasse. If you wanted to live really near work you could look at properties in the Wettstein quartier which is where the site is. Its quite pricey compared to the less glamarous Clara quarter, but its a nice place to live with easy access to the river. However as I've said, Basel is so compact and well integrated transport-wise that even Bruderholz down in the south is a very easy commute (Tram 15 from Bruderholz to Wettsteinplatz tram stop).

If you're moving for a job with Novartis or Roche, they should be providing you with relocation services. This typically includes three months of temporary housing. Homegate or comparis dot ch are good sites to look. You can plug it into Google translator for help. Again, but tram or bus you're never more than 15 mins away from anything. And if you embrace the biking culture here, even shorter time.
