Advice Please: Moving to Vevey-Montreux

Hi,

My husband has landed a contract in Vevey. My son and I plan to follow him over as soon as possible, but it's proving quite difficult or perhaps not as convenient as home to get accommodation in the Montreux-Vevey area. Could anyone please recommend an estate agent or letting agency? It's beginning to get quite frustrating. Also can anyone please recommend a local public (non-fee paying) school. Much appreciated.

You may have already seen it, but here's the link for the EF list of internet sites where you can search for houses/apartments.

It's going to be more difficult to find something in one of the towns along the lake. Some people, especially those with kids in the local schools, are very happy living in the villages that are slightly above Vevey/Montreux. Anthony gave you some good suggestions. You could also consider Blonay, St. Legier, Chardonne, Chexbres, Attalens (Canton Fribourg).

Good luck!

We are planning to rent out apartment that overlooks Dents du Midi and the lake, just up above Vevey. Place called Chardonne. The apartment is quite rare to find in the area , it is ideal for family with kids, and sub-garage plus two more parking, location is ideal, international schools, etc etc. If you are interested, please contact me. Cheers

Fuhrer is a good gerance from my past experience.

We used to live in Clarens on rue du Port, very charming area and just enough close to Montreux.

I am fairly sure you have a B working permit and you will have to live in Vaud for the first 5 years, so don't get accommodation in another Canton!

All the schools in canton Vaud will follow the same curriculum. Choosing one is pot luck, but they are all usually very proffessional. Your son needs to be watched carefully and encouraged to tell you his problems. Often Swiss kids can be very cruel to newcomers.

When you do move in you should invite all the neighbours for coffee and cake asap. and maybe if possible throw a childrens' party, maybe in MacDonalds. That might help to break the ice.

Depending on the age of your child - the primary school in Blonay is meant to be excellent - many of my colleagues children attend this.

No need to live in the same canton.

Your kids go to the local school where you live, helps them intergrate very well indeed, the alternative is private education.

All kids are cruel to each other, nationality is nothing to do with it.

Coffee & Cakes, MacDonalds ??? In Chardonne try wine and snacks....When in Rome do as the Romans (When in US do as the US !)

Forum anecdotal evidence suggests this is a widespread problem in the German-speaking parts, and MUCH less prevalent in the French-speaking parts. I've not heard of any trouble at all, across my kids and friends' kids spread over half a dozen schools.

Just to stop you worrying about this! Good luck for your move.

I'm fairly sure this isn't the case- hubby's company has a couple of designated senior people who are 'risk owners' or some such who are obliged to live in the same canton as the company base, but everyone else lives where they please, including Geneva or even over the border in France.

In my opinion not everyone drinks alcohol, for a newcomer coffee or tea and cakes is safer. The MacDonalds party is for kids and in my experience all people under 21 years old love an invitation to the big Mac shop. Personally I find all their products disgusting. If I have to I eat there I take a salad and a milk shake, but they have removed milk shakes, so that leaves just a salad.

My homeland is Europe.

Look at Gendre & Emonet. I also live in Montreux, and they seem to have some properties around that area.
