Owner wants to do renovations/refurbishment

Does anybody know what rights tenants have if the owner wishes to carry out renovations and/or refurbishments, particularly if you are being asked to move out?

How much notice should they give you? Can you seek any extensions on the notice period? Has this ever happened to anyone on the forum?
