| | | Re: Embarassing question re:Landlady | Quote: | | | | | Does she have any right to ask this of us? As far as I am concerned, she should NOT concern herself with the cleanliness of our apartment at all except at the time she handed the keys to us and again when we hand the keys to her. | | | | | In a nutshell: No. It is up to you whether you clean your apartment day and night or if prefer to live in a pig sty-like apartment – as long as you return a clean apartment upon termination of your rental agreement.
There are common-sense exceptions for repairs and apartment viewing with regard to potential future buyers or tenants, however, both only on prior agreement.

Reminds me of my gran. If it didn't smell of bleach then it wasn't clean.

She has no right at all. No right to check and no rights of entry.
Tell her she can do her inspection when you move out and you will be using a company with a handover guarantee. | | | | | and while you're at it, remind her that if she got laid at least once a year, she wouldn't be so anal about life in general.

Perhaps you might try a different approach here.
Simply inform your landlady that you're a foreigner and therefore clueless. What would be very useful to you is a good example of just how clean a house can be. When does she have time to show you her bathroom?

While I was a student in Germany I must have had the exact same landlady. She even had her own key and I realised after a while that she even entered my apartment (without telling me!!) while I was away for the weekends!!!!!
Since then I do not rent apartments from private people anymore - only agencies, much more peaceful.
But I would recommend to be as polite as possible and tell her that a bit of kalk does not give her the right for inspection! After all you are not a messy!

Kalk is definitely not causing any problems re maintencance, sale or re-renting. Hence, what she saw in your appartment does not give her the right to inspect!
Or does she really think that kalk decreases the value of the appartment? I wonder how she would defend her request. And the rudeness of her son in law is just unbelievable!! Why does he interfere anyway? Do they all live in the same house?

It is a matter of definition here, I am suggesting that the landlady may use this as a reason, afterall it is her flat and I am just trying to give a sister a guide.

It's a grey area really - a landlord/owner can ask to inspect the premises if they feel there is a situation which may lead to future repairs. Kalk build-up is one of those things that the Swiss landlord may prove that, if not removed and allowed to accumulate, may result in repairs being required further down the track.
If you enjoy where you live, it may indeed be advisable to give the apartment a bit of a clean (within reason) and have her over for an inspection. Remember though she has to make an appointment at a time convenient to you.

I don't agree with it. She has no rights to come to your house for her stressing over cleaning issues. If it is a case where you have to repair something afterward, this is for this exact reason why you gave a deposit in the first place!
I'll be so mad to have someone passing this kind of comments and judgement. People don't know when it is time to shut up....

You poor woman, your landlady sounds like a nosy nightmare. I have one almost as bad. She is always telling me exactly how I should do everything, from clean the bathroom taps to caring for my daughter. She must think I was born the day I moved into her apartment! But yours really tops the bill. Inspecting your apartment when she is there for something else and when you are ill! Cheeky Cow!!

This third point makes this case a grey area.

Kalc is a grey area and if not removed, could lead to future repairs/maintenance...I mean this is not US or Canada that we are talking about. So that first paragraph above is right on. In some cases the entire row of tiles may need to be removed to get it out.
Other than the Kalc or mould related reasons, I can't think of any other reason for an inspection until move out ...that's when the real story begins |

You know I really think the Swiss Cleanliness thing is a myth .... we have just bought a house and looked around quite a few, none were spotless. Then to my dismay when we finally purchased and were signing the final contract the owner threw in the fact that the house would NOT be cleaned to a professional standard, oh well I thought, they're Swiss it will be fairly clean .... wrong There must be a reason you never get invited round for a coffee without 2 weeks notice!

Apparently there are more than a few 'nosy nightmares' in Switz..

Or you can just take a day for major spring cleaning, invite the landlady up for a quick look and then let bygones be bygones.
It's better to have the landlady on your side then against you.
