| | | What would be your favorite city to live in that is just OUTSIDE of Geneva?
And why? Also, if you know, how could one commute via public transportation from that location to Geneva?
Thank you for your help.

Can't answer the first question (Nyon? Lausanne?) but as for the second one: http://www.sbb.ch/ |

If you are working in Geneva, Nyon is a good choice. With a train it takes 15min to travel to geneva, the frequency of train is very high.
It's a quiet and small town.

Geneva as town or as Canton ?
You have nice area in the canton which are well deserved by buses and soon by trams. You can even live over the border as some buses go there.
And if you have a car....

Nyon would be my choice. But there are some lovely villages in between Geneva and Nyon. Founex, Crans, Celigny, Coppet etc. They all have train stations, even though the commute is longer because you would be taking the regional train which stops at each village.

It depends. Some of the villages also have direct trains to Geneva. From Coppet it takes 9 min to reach Cornavin then. I know Versoix also has some direct trains.

I think most of the suggestions are somewhat stretching the definition of "city" as mentioned by the OP... If relatively small towns or villages are ok then there are plenty of options as mentioned, but for a city really the only option is Lausanne. Starting to get a bit of a long trek if you want to commute every day though.

Nyon for sure. Most other cities I've lived in took a fair bit more than 15 minutes from my apartment to the center of town- and that was in the same city! Nyon is just bustling enough to be alive and just peaceful enough* to make up for the horror of center Geneva.

Annecy - it's cheaper to live & has a nicer lake . On the other hand, commuting by public transport is impossible. Vive la coopération Franco-Suisse !

Nyon is great. It is 15 minutes to Geneva, and there
are many trains during rush hour.
If you want to party in Geneva until 3am, you have to
wait until 5am to go back to Nyon.

Nyon is great since it is small and quaint and big enough you feel like in a community/town. Anything smaller would leave some really longing to live somewhere bigger. You can work in Ge and live in a tiny place like Nyon, without having the feeling of living only in a bedroom community. Nyon has a town feel with independent life on its own, not just a bakery and newsagent like too many places around. The market, decent schools, events, shops and decent competition offers great perks to people who live here, unlike smaller places where people are pushed by one baker/grocer/one type of usually overpriced service..There is a pretty vibrant social scene, that people from other places come to enjoy, it is a magnet, so if you can spare yourself the drives, I would.
