Terminating a 3 year Car/Van insurance

I searched and found others annoyed that they were tied into a 3 year vehicle insurance policy. I just had a quote from a local agent, who said 3 years was all they were interested in quoting for. 1 year would be far more expensive, and that I could just send the plates back when I was not using the Van.

If I sell the van, will that get me out of the 3 year policy tied to them? I am only likely to use the van for 6 months total in the next 3 years.

Would like to hear from anyone who managed to quit a 3 year policy. Basically what happens when I sell the vehicle?

Just send the plates in if you're not using it. Then you don't pay insurance when not using it BUT you have to get the plates back within 12 months of deposit.

Also, no problem if you sell it, the insurance is terminated.

Re: Terminating a 3 year Car/Van insurance

I'm pretty sure that the unused premium is refundable.

I had the same problem with house insurance, but I asked if the unused portion was refundable and they said yes.

At least ask if it is refundable, then just don't worry about it.

Advantage:
Premiums are usually jacked up on short term policies anyway, so the value is better over the longer period.

oh, hang on

Also ask:
  • If the unused premium can be refunded, and
  • If there is a 'Pro-rata' method to refund the remaining premium
I say this because some may have a minium premium, others it's just by daily/monthly use.

Re: Terminating a 3 year Car/Van insurance

With all insurance policies here, if you can prove you don't need them any longer you can get most of your money refunded. However many policies tie you in to a 10 year contract, but if you leave Switzerland or sell the van you get a refund. Handing the plates back stops the insurance running, but there is usually a SFr 50,-- handling fee.

You must, before you sign any contract, understand what you are signing up to, and if you don't like one of the conditions get it removed.

I crossed out the automatic annual renewal clause on my Fitness center contract. They said they couldn't agree to that. I walked away. They called me back and agreed to a 12 month clause.

I found out that the TCS insurance is on a 12 month renewable basis, web page is only in D/F/I and I think the company behind the TCS offer is the Basler Insurance, and therefore can be reccommended, (but you have to join the TCS, membership is Fr 90,-- per year): http://www.tcs.ch/main/de/home/versicherungen.html
