I have been here almost 3 months and am getting pressured about organising health insurance. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations or could tell me if there is any differrence between the various companies on comparis.ch

Hi Z,

The basic insurance that you are required to have is a standardised packet. Generally comparis.ch will allow you to compare the prices, as you've already seen. There is also a rating next to the entries I believe, this is probably the easiest way to see what others think of these companies.

In my case I change every year, because they are always going up. Some years I've had increases of up to 30%, which I think is disgusting, and I've changed.

Be careful though, once you are signed up and the price rises for the next year you'll get a letter, and you'll only have a few weeks to change if there is a better offer from another company for the following year. If you don't change you'll get locked in for another year (unless you have the standard excess of 230 or 300 or whatever it is).

Also check the fine print, I think in the standard package you are only covered inside your own canton, which means if you get sick while visiting another canton, it could be an issue. Usually you have to pay an extra monthly fee to be covered all over Switzerland.

Just as a side note: Switzerland now has the second-highest health care costs in the world - only the USA has higher costs.

Just a question to all -

Has your health insurance gone up for 2006? I chose the cheapest company for 2005, but they are one of the last to post their premiums for 2006, so I'm not sure if they will be good value next year.

Have any of you checked and switched for 2006, or did you stay with the same company?

Oh and gee - I still haven't made a claim for 2005, just like I haven't made a claim in the 5 years since I've been here, but I'm still forced to pay health insurance every month....

For the last 4 years I have been with PROVITA and I am pretty happy with it. Their supplemental insurance is also pretty good and after comparing it to even the new insurance prices for 2007, it remains pretty competitive. Their truly only downfall for English speaking expats is that their website is only in German, but they do have English speaking agents. You can find more info on them at:

Hi,
I was insured by Groupe Mutuel for last 3 years with a catch that i cannot change the supplementary insurance before 5 years. Anyway due to the pathetic service , i am forced to move my basic insurance to Sanitas while keeping the supplementary insurance with GM. I know it is not a wise move but i have no other choice. Anybody with similar experience or any advice as i have one week to confirm the status

I used Sympany Vivao Callmed and worked quite well, specially the Natura extra cover that gets around 50% coverage on alternative medecine, medecine massages, etc. Tricky part is to get the information for the doctors with agreement, but once that is done is smooth.
