because of unfortunate circumstances, I only have basic car insurance, covering damages I do to others. But I want to make a week trip to EU, and for those reasons I would like to have also damages done to my own car and car theft covered. My current insurer is Allianz. Is it possible to buy this additional insurance for such a short period of time? I know it works for health insurances, so it would make sense...

Why don't you call your insurance company and find out?

So what were the unfortunate circumstances that caused the insurance company to refuse you cover? If one company refuse you, most of the others will too.

I would rather expect the cost, not that he was refused.

although I have salary way beyond average swiss one (software contractor in banking sector) and would like to pay for good insurance on my BMW 330d, I only have L permit (all contractors around me do, ie from France, Irish etc).
And that was the official answer from Allianz person that is on my basic contract. I contacted her with this request, but since first answer came 2 weeks after my question (sent directly to her official company email), I am asking here.
And the situation was that I left a car dealer do the insurance stuff, wanting full coverage. And when I came to pick up car, he started crappy speech about my permit etc. and I needed urgently car, so I took the only option he gave me.
So, any experience with short term insurance?

Allianz is pretty much useless, at their local Lausanne branch they told me they cannot do anything, and I should contact my person in Zurich. And she's not picking phone, answering emails etc.
Is there a possibility to buy this additional insurance (whether short term, or long term) anywhere else?
