I've got supplementary dental insurance with my health insurance company. I now need a dental implant, the insurance would cover for maximum of CHF1000 and I would have to pay the remaining.

I was wondering if they would still pay if I got it done in Germany? I mean the euro is ridiculously cheap now and dental work is generally cheaper there than here anyway.

By the way, does anyone have any experience with dental work across the border?

I think that the dental service is basically the same in Germany and Switzerland. It is just half the price. It might not be convenient to go to Germany for treatment especially if you have to go more than once. It is a pure cost convenience question.

Sod it. I've just been back to London twice this month for dental appointments and even including the airfares, it still worked out at about a quarter of the price it is here.

Plus, I now have 1.5 kilos of proper smoked back bacon in the freezer.

You need to check with your insurer. Some will cover work abroad, others not. Even if it is cheaper. Stupid I know, but the truth is all in the small print....

I had an implant done in Switzerland a year or so ago. Even if it is cheaper in Germany, the number of visits I had to make would have made it so inconvenient. So I guess it also depends on how flexible your schedule is. With a small child, part-time work and study it wouldn't have worked out for me going somewhere else.
