Hi,
I'm not an expert... but yes, my understanding is that if you have not had health insurance you do have to pay the back-dated amount.
On the bright side... recently I had a large health insurance bill (consisting of my daily contributions for a 3 month hospital stay), which I wasn't expecting and couldn't afford to pay in one go. I rang my insurance company, and they agreed a payment schedule with me, so I'm paying it off over 5 months. They even gave me a month's grace before I made the first payment.
So if you do find yourself with a large back-dated bill, I'd suggest phoning your insurance company and explaining the situation.
As for how much it's likely to be... that depends on your particular health insurance scheme and what franchise / premium combination you have gone for.
Is your employer providing accident insurance? My understanding is they should be... but be aware that is compulsory too.

I suspect your Spanish insurance was to visit Switzerland, not live here.

I am trying to be very sympathetic here- but you've just said on another thread that you've been working 60 hours a week (12 hours a day) - so this is not just a few hours, is it? Your Spanish health insurance is only valid for emergencies as a tourist, not as a working resident. Normally au-Pairs have a special status- but you are not working as an au-pair in the normal sense (eg mothers help/support with plenty of time off for language lessons paid by family). You really need to wait for results and then make sure you get somebody to help you discuss this with the Insurance people and come to some arrangement with them. Surely you must have known this was compulsory. I know it is not easy- I went to work in the UK when I was 19 too.

why do you need to say since when you are living here?
When i got my first insurance i was pregnant with my first baby and when i took the insurance they didnt ask me to prove since when i was here. I think they just charge the mandatory? 3 months back.

Hiya
If you have a low income, the council will pay subsidies towards your health insurance. Probably they will pay your whole premium as CHF 700 is below the living existence minimum. The claims can be backdated.
I have checked online where you have to apply for health insurance subsidies in Basel-Land, and it says, that when you submit the tax return and your income is in the range to be entitled for subsidies, you will get automatically a form sent to claim.
As you seem not to have received this form, I assume you haven't paid any taxes yet, right?
So what I would do, also in mind what you wrote in your other thread:
- Fill out a tax form and declare your income, since you have been working in CH.
-> you are entitled to claim for healthcare subsidies.
- Go to the RAV (regional employment centre) they will help you with the reference letter from your previous employer, and the other issues.
Tax office Basel-Land: http://maps.google.ch/maps?f=q&sourc...asel-Land&z=16
RAV Basel-Land: http://www.baselland.ch/adressen-htm...html#body-over
If you need an interpreter, inform the RAV before you attend the first appointment.
Good luck!
And no worries... you will be fine. | | The following 5 users would like to thank m_dalloway for this useful post: | |

Swiss law says that you need to be insured from the beginning of your residency in this country; regardless of her sad story, she still needs to obey that law. Premiums are calculated upon it, and the fact is that your health is protected by this insurance even if you haven't paid for it yet - meaning that if you don't pay your premiums, the rest of us shoulder some of your cost.
I would be very surprised if your insurance did not look at your residence permit to determine the date you moved in, or ask if you were transferring from another insurer, etc.
edit: no, beautiful_fairy, I was quoting coconut.

Did you have a permit for your last job? If so the insurance probably needs to be back dated to when the permit started, but if not then you can probably forget about it and get a permit and insurance from when your new job started.
Perhaps you can leave and come back again...
I have no insurance, because I'm still here as a visitor, and will stay that way until I can get a job (obviously not staying more than 90 days at a time).

I have B permit from my first job. that job ive been working 6 months, then another 6 months just doing hours in different places, and some unoficial work. Now i have contrat again, and im sure i have a salary (full time), thats why i decide to make a inssurance.
So now i have to pay all this year and maybe a penalti. :-(
