| | | Re: Spider or poisonous insect bite - Accident insurance or Sickness Insurance | Quote: | | | | | Any news on the Spider ? | | | | | No but if he did not die for immediate intoxication from the small amount of blood in my alcahol stream, I will find the little bugger and break all his legs and then we can share a trip to the doctor tomorrow. I hope he has his insurance as well. | Quote: | | | | | Colin. Call a taxi now, pack a credit card, health insurance card and residence permit and take yourself down to your nearest Notfall. | | | | | Thanks, yes, under normal circumstances I would have done this, very sensible advice in these situations. Any bad reaction to a bite or allergy like thing is not to be taken lightly. However the first morning I just thought it was the flu and the bite was a mosquito bite of which I had a couple.
The symptoms are lessening now so I will leave it till tomorrow as I am fairly confident that there is no life threatening urgency at this moment. | Quote: | | | | | | | | | | Thanks for that. Yes, I believe there are a couple of "walk-in centers" now in Basel.
Again, thanks guys... just have to wait for the cold sweats to go and get a good night's sleep.

Is there an equivalent in that city? | | | | | True...but it's a direct train and zero walking on the other end. Might actually be quickest and easier. But I'd take myself off to a hospital tonight...no sense in waiting IMO.

Those spider bites are nasty- they leave scars. Both my husband and friend suffered from them. Are these spiders particular to Switzerland?
I am allergic to wasps/ bees I didn't used to be, now I swell up, you might be allergic.
They have been discussed on the forum before Spiders that bite. Anyone else experienced them in Switzerland?

| | | Re: Spider or poisonous insect bite - Accident insurance or Sickness Insurance | Quote: | | | | | Hi all,
I have been bitten by either a spider or an insect and have had a fever (which I initially assosiated with flu and still could be, who knows) and the reaction around the bite is not going away dispite applications of cream supplied by the pharmacy.
At this point if it is not looking better tomorrow and I am not feeling better tomorrow I recon I should get medical attention. Only having been in Switzerland as a resident and working for three weeks now, I don't have my Sickness insurance sorted out yet but was wondering if this would not be covered under accident insurance as it is an external event?
Can anybody provide some advice. And yes, google is most probably my friend but I am still a little feverish so I thought I would cover all the bases at once. | | | | | Apparently, as noted earlier, spider bites are covered under accident insurance, which everyone gets from their employer... so you should be good. But if you have a future situation where you need to use the health insurance, don't worry - you have 3 months to get it, and it will be retroactive back to your entry date, AND all providers are obligated to take you regardless of whether you have a retroactive claim to make.

I had such a bite whilst mountain biking about 6 weeks ago, just above the ankle. The bite actually caused a slight nervous pain down to the ankle for the whole day.
The reaction lasted a few days, went away, only to come back great itchyness an slight horrible rash down from the bite for about a week. It's since gone.
I still don't know what it was, but I am assuming it was a spider or a hornet as I've been bitten by bees and wasps before with no reactions.

Although Friday nights are never the best time to visit.

Wonderful info!
Does anyone have some feedback about this clinic? Can you choose one of those doctors as GP?
Thanks! | Quote: | | | | | | | | | | |

My advice in decreasing order of priority:
- Get medical help
- Figure out how it will be paid for later
Cheers,

Thanks! | | | | | These are emergency walk-in clinics so I'm not sure they would take patients on a permanent basis. Also, the times I have been there, there have never been the same doctors on site so I am guessing, due to the long hours that the clinic is open, the doctors do a kind of rotation there and have a more permanent position in their own office elsewhere in the city.

If it is so, is there any difference with the notfall of the Universitätspital? | Quote: | | | | | These are emergency walk-in clinics so I'm not sure they would take patients on a permanent basis. The walk-in clinics are more for minor, non-emergency ailments / accidents which you need looking at sooner than you can get an appointment with your usual doctor.

Immediate life threatening situations, use a hospital.

Just make sure that any bites are not mistaken for Giant Hogweed rash- I think that there is something similar in Switzerland. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_hogweed | |
