OK this question has bound to be answered before, but can anyone tell me roughly how much a family health insurance would cost for 2 adults and two kids aged 5 and 6. Thanks

600-1000/month, depending on plan and deductables.

Re: cost for health insurance - family of 4??
Ours is about 270 per adult (basic plus some supplemental with Groupe Mutuel, Hausartz model (we have a great local doctor), and for the kids it varies with age, but it's around 80chf per child, and that includes some supplemental, with Visana.
I've had no problems with either organisation - I find I need to write a letter to Visana (they don't answer email), and for Groupe Mutuel they take up to a week to answer email enquiries...in english...
Jenny, who is on the forum here, set it up for us, and explained our options...
For the first three years we hardly saw a doctor for us adults, and with a very high franchise, but I am going to change mine (you can only change the franchise once a year) - because now that I've found a really good 'Hausartz' (local doctor) I'd like to be more pro-active about my health...
You can have just the basic obligatory insurance which would cost about 600 altogether every month in your case (depends on your own age as well) to adding various options of complementary insurance that include private or semi-private rooms in case of hospitilisation and coverage of dental care etc.
You can also get discounts by taking a higher "franchise" or agreeing to call their call centre every time before seeing your doctor - there are many alternatives.
It is also advisable to look around on Comparis (link provided above) and compare the coverage provided by each company before deciding.
What I would recommend for your children, in view of their age, is to take complementary insurance that will cover the cost of dental corrective devices should this become necessary later on as that can be really costly if you do not have this covered.
