I'm a Canadian citizen currently living in Aargau and studying in Zurich (visa type D), and have noticed that all of the health insurance companies offering cheap premiums to foreign students offer quotes for students with B-type permits, and sometimes other types as well, but never D-type visas.

Am I missing something?


Or can anyone recommend a basic health insurance company for a Canadian student living in Aargau?

Well, actually you should have a permit other than the Visa. If you registered at the local Gemeinde, they should have processed a residence permit of some sort. Depending on what you are studying, you very often get a B-permit.

Maybe you just haven't gotten your permit in the mail yet? If you haven't registered with the local authorities, do so as fast as you can!

Yes. Your D visa is an entry visa. You need to register for your resident permit. Go to the commune and do that right away.

I actually have already registered with the Gemeinde and my permit is in the mail.

Hmm well what kind of student insurance were you considering?

The canton of Aarau accepts european cards, but nothing else.

Really all I'm looking for is the cheapest possible premium to cover my basic health insurance, as required by law.
I don't have any Canadian insurance which would cover me here, and I also have very little money... so I'll take the best I can find.
Unfortunately it seems like the cheapest premiums available don't apply for citizens living in Aargau....
