Transfer insurance to a new car

Hello,

I just got a new car (to be delivered in 8 weeks), and I don't know how to proceed with my current insurance, since I will keep the same plate number.

Am I obliged to stay with my current insurance company (and accept any offer they might make for the new car), or can I check around looking for a best offer?

I believe that my current contract would be still valid for another year or two, for the current car.

Thanks,

Gustavo

You have to stay with current insurance.
Unless you send back the number plate, then you can cancel the insurance.

Re: Transfer insurance to a new car

but when I cancel my number, is there any disadvantage on this?

I would assume that at least my current bonus level is lost, right? Otherwise looks like a good solution, since I have no reasons to keep the current plate number...

thanks,

Gustavo

You should get a confirmation from your current insurance about your bonus level. Anyway check with your current insurance you can cancel in this way; usually you can.

AFC has no particular reputation at present
Re: Transfer insurance to a new car

When you change your car you can change your insurance, that is the law.
Try using comparis for a quote on line.
All the major insurers have English speaking reps.
I have just changed mine from AXA due to an accident (thats another legal reason you can choose to change) to Generali, i have the same insurance cover and it costs me 300 Chf less!
Its well worth shopping around.

About "When you change your car you can change your insurance, that is the law."

Do you also have the right to terminate the old insurance early without any financial penalty?

Re: Transfer insurance to a new car

if you hand in the plates. there is no penalty. But then you have to buy new plates for the new car.

Re: Transfer insurance to a new car

There is no need to hand in the plates at all! As stated above if the car is changed or there is a claim on the policy the contract may be broken early *within 2 weeks of the claim being accepted*

We do not have a financial penalty, the remaining amount on the policy for the year is refunded, perhaps give or take a few days depending on the calculation. Most others companies work the same way 'tho I do know one of our competitors that are charging penalties or "locking in" in any area they can but it is my understanding it is against Swiss law to penalise in such a transfer case; I will have to confirm this....

Another reason to be loosely keep in mind when using Comparis; It is great for a ballpark but is not impartial and you cannot see the differences in the covers you are comparing some leg work is still required.

Re: Transfer insurance to a new car

Thank you all for the replies... I guess now I need to collect the offers to check if I need or not to consider changing the insurance company.
