just found out I am pregnant- Insurance begins Dec 1
Hi,
I am a Canadian married to a swiss and have my insurance beginning on December 1st with.
I just found out I am very newly pregnant (today).
With KPT I have signed the contract for private and the full range of choices on and I have not yet set a doctors appointment to confirm the pregnancy.
Does anyone know if KPT will include this and cover me for the pregnancy care/ private hospital birth.
Let me know if you know anything about this policy, as it is all in german and Im freaking out that I won't be covered.
Hi,
the basic part of any obligatory health insurance here has to cover you no matter what. The private part may have a clause of 1yr or so. Look for words containing "Frist" and "Schwanger" in the T&Cs.

Thanks so much for the quick responses,
If anyone has any other info specifically on KPT private insurance
or english speaking docs in Zurich that would be awesome. Im going to have to set up an appointment soon.

Congratulations. When did you arrive in CH though? Your health Insurance has to be backdated to the first day of month of arrival here- even though you have 3 months to choose/organise one. (We moved on 23rd March and had to pay from 1st March, once we had found and contracted an insurance, as per Swiss law).

We (family of 4) have had KPT for many years - here and previously abroad with my wife's postings.
Our first daughter was born in London and KPT insurance afforded my wife to have "private" medical care, there. I, as a British citizen, also received private health care, there, as and when needed.
Since, here (for over 10yrs.) we have continued with KPT without complaint, including my wife's second pregnancy and birth of our second daughter.
With four of us, we've reduced our cover to half private, but often receive same level of care as full private.
KPT have recently covered laser eye surgery for me, which isn't always, automatically covered by medical insurance, without permission.

probably depends on the type of additional insurance but I just read that the "Karenzzeit" (time period you'd have to wait until you get pregnant, starting from Dec 1st in your case) is 270 days.. so they can refuse to offer the services for the private model.

Relax...you are now in the land of civilised healthcare.
It is only the first class insurance that has the lockout period for pregnancy. The basic will still cover you. We only have basic and we were more than satisfied with the level of care we got when Mrs nickatbasel was carrying nickatbasel Jnr.
I am surprised your Swiss husband is not able to advise.
Cheers - and congratulations.
Nick.

KPT is a rather 'cool' health insurance. We have never had any issues with them. Not even when we were 4 months late to subscribe for the kids' orthodontal insurance before the age of 5.
