giving birth in Switzerland

Hello everybody,

This is my first time using this website. I have got a question and hope some of you can offer an answer:

My girlfriend and I are expecting a baby in March next year. We are not married and we intend to remain this way I live in Switzerland on a B permit and basic health insurance. My girlfriend lives in E.U and she only wants to come here to deliver the baby. Do any of you know if in this case she has to pay the expenses on her own? do the government pay anything at all? can my insurance cover anything even though we are not officially married?

I appreciate any kind of suggestions>>

Thank you

Firstly, congratulations! (Sorry, feeling slightly soppy as my first child was born two weeks ago )

Now for the bad news - it would be the mother's insurance that would pay, so if your girlfriend doesn't have Swiss basic health insurance she is not going to be covered and will be liable for the expenses. Whether you are married or not makes no difference as far as I am aware.

It may be worth investigating whether her health insurance in her country of residence would cover expenses for a birth in Switzerland...

Good luck.

Re: giving birth in Switzerland

I think that you have to pay everything, and the price has five numbers :-(
Congrats, btw! :-)

Start the process of bringing your girlfriend in CH and get married. Asap. Everything will be a little bit easy after...

Good luck!

Re: giving birth in Switzerland

Thank you very much guys. And congratualtions for the new baby

I always believed that children are a blessing. I wish I could convince my girlfriend to move here. She has a very well paid job and she does not want to risk it by coming here to Switzerland to the unknown..... Our idea was that she comes here to deliver the baby and spend her maternity leave. But it seems it is not easy since she does not have a Swiss insurance here. I will ask her to check with her local health insurance provider whether they cover expenses outside Slovenia....

Your girlfriend would have to come to Switzerland, get a permit and an insurance. Then the insurance would cover the costs of the birth according to the bridge of the policy. If you're not married, you can try to sponsor your girlfriend for a permit (even if she's EU she won't be given one if she plans not to work) and even then I'm not sure if it would work out as you're not Swiss. You would, of course, then have to keep paying her insurance until she's here.

Re: giving birth in Switzerland

Marrying, getting a B permit with finding a job prior to that, or whatever hocus-pocus you'll try, it seems a bit late to me the start working on that and straighten it all out before March 2012...
She should certainly ask her health insurance about medical cover in Switzerland, and then she could maybe, purely by coincidence, but with the proper papers attesting her medical cover outside of Slo, be in Switzerland when she felt the baby was coming...

I think her getting insurance here with the pregnancy is a pre-exsisting condition an would not be covered. Besides that after the birth sounds like she would go back anyway and drop the insurance. Best is probably to give birth there then come and visit.

if it's the basic kind of insurance a providor CANNOT refuse coverage. They would have to take her. However, I have no idea, maybe they would under the condition that she takes the insurance out for minimum a specific number of months?

I also have to warn the OP that it's very difficult to find a gynecologist willing to take new patients...I'm speaking from experience

Re: giving birth in Switzerland

Keep in mind, whether she has insurance that covers or tries to get swiss insurance, you will need insurance for the baby from birth, so please check on this as well. If anything out of the ordinary happens it could get very expensive, and I would definitely make sure both mother and child are fully covered.

This is completely incorrect. Pregnancy is covered under Basic insurance. The insurance company you choose can't refuse to cover Basic insurance. You can arrive here 9 months pregnant and start Basic insurance and still be covered for pregnancy.

Whether or not she can can come here and start Swiss insurance at all is another question though.

Re: giving birth in Switzerland

Hello,

actually i was in the same situation as your girlfriend last year. I was working in France and my partner in Switzerland. And I just wanted to be with my him when our baby will be born.
Here are the steps I followed:
- I informed the security admnistration in france that I will be abroad for the maternity leave - they have supplied me with E112 certificate confirming that I am covered with social security during your residence abroad
- as I was going to stay more than 3 months I applied for the residence permit
- if you stay more than 3 months in CH you need to subscribe to swiss insurance ( in my case it was not necessary, as i had a french insurance. However I decided to take the swiss one beacause french insurance cover a very little part of the real costs of giving a birth).
- the inurance companies in CH are obliged to cover you with basic insurance if your are pregnant but if you stay longer than 3 months

I hope I was quite clear but if you have any other questions I will try to help
