AHV ( entitlement ) question

I don't post often, but do read the forum.

I will be reaching 65 in March, and have dual Swiss/British nationality. I paid into the AHV system for about 10 - 12 years.

Can anyone tell me approx how much pension I can expect? I have already filled in the relevant forms and sent them to Geneva.

Thanks in advance

The Swiss pension is based on 44 years of contributions, the amount you earnt makes a difference.

My best guess is in 500-1000 chf a month range.

At a guess, based on my experience, I would expect Fr 450,--

Re: AHV ( entitlement ) question

Thanks fatmanfilms and Sbrinz.

I will know in the next couple of months. But it's nice to have a rough estimate as to how much I might be getting.

My wife is 2 years behind me, and has a similar contribution ratio.

I will post to let you know when I have the exact figure. I'm sure that it might come in handy for other people in a similar situation.

Vielen Dank.

Re: AHV ( entitlement ) question

Presumably you know that you also get your British old-age pension.

When I applied for mine (and I started working in 1953 at the age of 15) I had no documentation at all. The Pension Office in Newcastle were able to go back all that time after I gave them the name of one then employer and pull up all my pension contribution information for the 14 or so years I worked in England.

Which was a great surprise!

Re: AHV ( entitlement ) question

Is there an AHV pension calculator online anywhere?

I ask because if the amount is that small it may not be worth collecting at all, since we are US citizens. If I understand things correctly, claiming from Switzerland will reduce our US Soc Sec thanks to WEP - so it may actually be in our interest to forgo the Swiss AVH altogether so that we can collect the full US amount.

(I don't work here, but am fully vested in the US. My husband pays more than twice the minimum, so I don't have to ante into CH AHV myself. OH will at most have paid AHV for 22 years at retirement, so only would collect half. I'm guessing neither amount would be much - and probably not worth the ensuing pain on the US end.)

Anyone with US/CH experience?

From my understanding, you don't get your AHV at all because the Swiss and the US Social Security admin have a bilateral agreement. Unless I'm misunderstanding your question (likely).....

Re: AHV ( entitlement ) question

I can't answer the OP's question but I found an overview of Swiss Social Security on the homepage of the Federal Social Insurance, which explains the different social inscurances. I hope this helps to understand the system.

Re: AHV ( entitlement ) question

There is a Swiss pension calculator. It involved downloading filling in a long PDF form printing it out and posting it to your local office.

To the OP as you will be entitled to your pension in March you should do this at once. NB in Switzerland you must claim your state pension, it doesn't come automatically...

Re: AHV ( entitlement ) question

You can calculate the approximate amount here:
http://www.ahv-services.ch/reschweb/rentenform.aspx

I've never tried it... a bit too soon for me...

Thanks for the replies.

"Presumably you know that you also get your British old-age pension."

Yes, already applied for it. I'm lucky, as it used to be 44 years for a full state pension, but it's now only 30 years.

Yes, I have already applied for it.

Re: AHV ( entitlement ) question

Hi Guys.

UPDATE:

Got a reply from the AHV Geneva, and I have 14 years worth of contributions, which equates to sfr 455 per month, about £314 per month

I have a full British state pension 33 years which works out as £498 per month

Just thought I'd keep you updated

Re: AHV ( entitlement ) question

Hi. I have another question regarding AHV. I will shortly need to apply for my wife to receive her Swiss AHV pension. Just to give me an idea, are womens pensions on par with men, or are payments less. She will have about 11 years contributions. The last two years were part time due to having our first child.

Thanks in advance.
